Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Pictures released National Treasure in 2004, a historical action-mystery movie that, despite its age of sixteen years, is still entertaining to watch. It stars Nicholas Cage as Ben Gates, a historian and treasure hunter who has spent the better part of his adult life in quest of a certainly lost treasure trove. Riley, Abigail, and his father Patrick are all there to support him.
A Salon review dubbed it the “ridiculous guilty pleasure America needs now,” yet Rotten Tomatoes currently has a good audience rating of 76 percent for National Treasure. It’s been several years since the release of National Treasure, yet the picture is still widely discussed. National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the film’s follow-up, was a financial success and was released in 2007. In the sequel, Ben set out to clear his ancestor Thomas Gates, who was accused of being a co-conspirator in President Lincoln’s assassination, of any involvement.
A third National Treasure film was eagerly expected following the release of the second picture, which saw what many saw to be a prelude to a larger series. Many fans assumed that the threequel would never materialize after a slew of disappointments. However, National Treasure 3 has unexpectedly returned. A tentative release date for National Treasure 3 is listed below.
National Treasure 3 Is In Development?
National Treasure 3 was said to be in development as early as 2009, barely two years after the release of the second picture. After producer Jerry Bruckheimer told ComingSoon.net in November 2008 that the screenplay was in the hands of the authors, this announcement followed. It had been a few years since any fresh details regarding National Treasure 3 had been revealed, but in 2013, actor Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole, the film’s comic relief and best buddy, was interviewed by Motion Captured about the project. According to Bartha, the script for a third film had already been completed and was ready to go to production.
Jon Turteltaub, who directed National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was interviewed by Collider in 2018 about National Treasure 3. Turtletaub explained why the third picture hadn’t been made, admitting that the script was ready to go, but the powers that be weren’t quite enthusiastic about the idea.

“The studio couldn’t say yes since the script wasn’t outstanding enough. It’s excellent enough, in fact, that the studio might have responded, ‘Yes, keep going. ‘Get up close and personal.’ “He went on to say more about it. When it comes to converting something decent enough into something amazing in an hour and a half, Jerry Bruckheimer is the maestro.
National Treasure 3 Release Date Updates
When the Hollywood Reporter reported on Bad Boys 4 in January 2020, it revealed that a new screenwriter had been hired for National Treasure 3 (in a piece on the picture). For the long-awaited sequel, Chris Bremner, the writer of 2020’s Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys 4, was hired. With this announcement, Collider revealed that Bruckheimer would return to the National Treasure franchise to direct National Treasure 3.
There is very little more known about the planned film, including the extent to which Bremner’s version will use the original script. Despite this, Reed responded to renewed interest in the third installment with the statement, “I believe it’s time to reimagine.”
To learn more about the reasons why National Treasure 3 was never finished, Collider sat down with National Treasure 3 producer Jason Reed in September 2020. After the success of the first two films, Reed said he did his best to have a third one created. Because he believes it never happened, he went on to explain why “As a result of this, despite the fact that the films were incredibly popular and had a large following, the firm was never able to profit on the property. If National Treasure 3 had happened, it would have been a continuation of the series.”

Even in the best of conditions, movies take time to create, but in our contemporary period, with a global pandemic making it impossible to shoot movies and TV shows, National Treasure 3 may take longer than usual to reach the silver screen.
The exact start date of production has yet to be announced as of February 2021; nevertheless, it appears that it will not be viable until at least the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 at the earliest. National Treasure 3 might be released as early 2023, taking into account the time needed for main filming, editing, advertising, and the like. There’s no official word on this, but it’s an approximate estimate that fans may hold to for the time being.

Conclusion
National Treasure 3 may be some years away, but it turns out that a third film isn’t the only National Treasure-related project currently in development. In a May 2020 interview with Collider, Bruckheimer said that a National Treasure series for Disney+ was in the works. Additionally, he spoke about the third theatrical release.
“We’re certainly working on one for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” said Bruckheimer. “They’re both very active.”
The long-awaited National Treasure film and TV series will finally be available to fans after more than a decade without any new National Treasure content and is virtually a treasure trove quantity.
