Fans of the Netflix show “Sex Education” can’t wait for the fourth season, but Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley, has confirmed that she won’t be in the fifth season.
Mackey won the Rising Star Award at the 2023 BAFTAs on Sunday for her roles in “Sex Education,” “Eiffel,” “Death on the Nile,” and “Emily.”
But after her win, when she talked to the press, including Insider, she was asked if she would be back for Season 5 of “Sex Education.”
Mackey told us: “The fifth season of “Sex Education?” Bloody hell, I just finished the fourth one, Love, last week! No, I don’t believe that. I’ve told Maeve goodbye. “So, it’s a happy farewell.”
The 27-year-old actress will next be seen in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which also stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Simu Liu. She has previously said that she wishes fans would stop comparing her to Robbie.
The news comes soon after Eric Effiong actor Ncuti Gatwa said he would leave the show after season four, likely because he would be playing the 15th Doctor in the long-running science-fiction show “Doctor Who” on the BBC.

Gatwa is also set to be in “Barbie” with Mackey, but it’s not clear what roles they will play in the highly anticipated movie.
Since Netflix has finished making the next batch of episodes, it seems likely that Season 4 of “Sex Education” will come out in the second half of 2023. But Mackey and Gatwa aren’t the only ones leaving the show.
A few other “Sex Education” actors won’t be back for season four, and “Bridgerton” star Simone Ashley will no longer be playing Olivia Hanan. Tanya Reynolds and Patricia Allison will not be returning as Lily Inglehart and Ola Nyman, another fan favorite couple.
