The Continent is going through a sad time. This weekend, Netflix told us the shocking news that Henry Cavill will not be back as Geralt of Rivia in season 4 of The Witcher. Liam Hemsworth from “The Hunger Games” will take his place and wear the blonde wig and two swords.
Even though it’s good to know that The Witcher will continue past season 3, which finished filming with Henry Cavill in early September and will air in the summer of 2023, this news is very bittersweet, with the emphasis on the bitter.
Fans of the books and games as well as people who are new to the world of The Witcher all agree that Cavill’s performance as Geralt is the best thing about the show. It would be an understatement to say that he lived up to the part. Cavill reassured fans that he understood the role and that The Witcher was in good hands.
What will The Witcher look like without him? It’s hard to say, and whenever a role is changed, it’s best to wait to judge until we see how the new actor does (though I do not envy Liam Hemsworth the enormous task of stepping into this part.)
Given how hard Cavill worked to get the part, it’s clear that this was a project that really interested him. When it was first announced that the streamer was making a Witcher series, Cavill got in touch with them before they even started looking for actors to fill the roles. He didn’t get the part at first, but after Netflix looked at about 50 other White Wolf hopefuls, he was eventually asked to try out again.
His agent told him not to worry about it if he didn’t want to since he was basically giving Netflix a second chance. Cavill said, “It’s Geralt of Rivia, of course, I’ll do it.” The story of how he got the role is now part of Hollywood lore.
Cavill told The Hollywood Reporter last year that he was committed to showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich’s plan for The Witcher to have seven seasons. He said, “Yes, for sure.” “As long as we can keep writing great stories that honor Sapkowski’s work.” So what’s different?
We won’t know more about this casting news until someone who is actually involved tells us. But there have been enough stories about problems behind the scenes and other opportunities that have come up for the actor recently that could help explain why he left.
At the end of the day, only Henry Cavill himself can tell us for sure why he quit The Witcher. Until then, we look at the signs.
In The Dceu Henry Cavill Is Coming Back As Superman
Let’s start with the most obvious reason why Henry Cavill is leaving The Witcher: he was offered another job. Cavill played Superman/Clark Kent in several DC movies, starting with 2013’s “Man of Steel” and ending with “Justice League” (and later, Zack Snyder’s “Justice League director’s cut”). He was one of the main characters in DC’s first real attempt to make a series of movies that work together like Marvel’s.
But after Justice League, Walter Hamada, the head of DC Studios, decided he wanted to go in a different direction with Superman. He wanted to reboot the character with a screenplay by Ta-Nehesi Coates and a Black actor in the role. The movie never really got going, and it became clear over time that a lot of fans still wanted Cavill back.
Things got more interesting with the new movie Black Adam. In a scene after the credits, Cavill finally comes back as Superman, setting up future movies. The story of how that happened behind the scenes is very interesting. At first, Hamada didn’t like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s idea to have Cavill come back, so Johnson went over Hamada’s head to Warner Bros.
It’s impossible to know exactly what happened, but we do know that Cavill came back as Superman in Black Adam. His stinger scene at the end of the movie was shot just one month before it came out. After 15 years, Hamada stepped down as head of DC Studios the same week that Black Adam came out in theatres.
Shortly after that, it was announced that The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran would take over as co-chairs of DC Studios. At the time, there were rumors that DC Studios was finally going to change the way its superhero franchises were going. Johnson has talked a lot about this.
Cavill said that he was back as Superman after Black Adam came out and that the character has a “bright future ahead.” This made the situation even worse. Many people think that he will play the superhero in more movies, including a possible sequel to Man of Steel. Dwayne Johnson has also said that his antihero Black Adam and Superman will “absolutely fight” on screen in the future.
So, yes, Henry Cavill is back as Superman for sure. But would that offer be enough for him to leave The Witcher on its own? Cavill did fight to become Geralt of Rivia, after all. Would he have really just dropped the two swords as soon as he had a chance to put on a cape again?
There are rumors that both Cavill’s management team and Warner Bros. don’t want the actor to be in any more TV shows now that he’s getting so many movie roles. Grace Randolph, the creator and host of Beyond the Trailer, says, “His management thinks he’s a movie star now because of the #Superman cameo,” and it’s said that Warner Bros. agrees with them. It’s important to remember that these are just rumors; we don’t have any solid evidence to support them.
Cavill’s return as Superman could be the main reason or, more likely, just one of many reasons why he left The Witcher. Either way, it seems likely that it was at least a factor in his decision. But there might be something else to think about.
