When Shetland’s Season Eight Renewal was announced, the BBC confirmed that filming for these new episodes will begin in the spring of 2023, implying that the show will most likely return later that year.
Shetland season 8 cast:
It will be the first season of the show without Jimmy, and Mark Bonnar’s character Duncan Hunter has revealed that he will not be returning in Season 7’s first episode.

Shetland season 8: Who will replace Douglas Henshall?
The BBC has confirmed that the show will have a new lead, a la The Bay, which will undoubtedly provide plenty of narrative fodder.
“It’ll Be Strange Knowing They’re Filming An Eighth Series Without Me,” Henshall told Radio Times Magazine. “I hope it works out, and I wish them the best of luck, but it won’t be the show I was in. They’ll Have To Create An Entire New Show.”
Regardless of the difficulty, the people behind it are very excited about what is to come.
“We will miss him enormously, but he leaves the show in poor health, and we’re extremely excited about the plans we have for bringing more of this much loved drama to audiences all over the world,” said Gaynor Holmes, Executive Producer of BBC Drama.
