Among all the COVID craziness, David E. Kelley’s crime drama thriller Big Sky was released in 2020. Based on C. J. Box’s Highway series of books, the series was later renewed for a second season, which premiered in 2021, and has now recently been renewed for a third season, which is set to premiere in September of this year.
The show is set in Montana and follows Detectives Cassie Dewell and Cody Hoyt as they go on the hunt for the bad guys; specifically, they seek assistance from his ex-wife (and ex-cop) in finding missing sisters who have been kidnapped by a strange truck driver.
It’s a captivating, mind-boggling show that shows us that we’re never completely safe anywhere, with themes running throughout human trafficking and murder right under our noses. Here’s a look at the Big Sky characters for those who need a refresher or haven’t yet delved into the mystery.
Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles)
Beau Arlen, who appears in the season two finale, steps in as temporary Sheriff and immediately creates interesting gender politics. Most of the men like him because he’s a good ol’ boy from Texas, handsome and charming, and interested in fishing and hunting; however, his dominance and traditionalism become antagonistic to Jenny, causing some problems. Jensen Ackles plays Beau Arlen, who rose to prominence as a soap opera star before starring in major TV shows such as Smallville, Supernatural, and his intense recent turn in The Boys. Fans are excited to see Ackles return for season three of Big Sky.
Sheriff Walter Tubb (Patrick Gallagher)
Patrick Gallagher is probably best known for playing Ken Tanaka on Glee or Atilla the Hun in the Night at the Museum movies, but in Big Sky, he played Sheriff Walter Tubb. He does his best to keep things in order while working with Cassie and Jenny. This old-school man who breeds Dobermans is a bit strict and careful, but he is ultimately kind, loyal, and determined. Investigators do a great job of finding criminals, but it’s up to the Sheriff to put them in jail for good and make sure they stay there. Without the Sheriff, nothing would be done right and within the law. Gallagher does a great job of building the character and tying the story together.

Mark Lindor (Omar Metwally)
At the end of the first season, we met Mark Lindor, who was a big help in finding Ronald and figuring out how to stop him. His knowledge and connections were a great addition to the team, and he and Cassie, and Jenny worked well together right away. Now, we can’t imagine what Big Sky would be like without him.
People liked Mark because he was so helpful, and Metwally did a great job making the character come to life and fitting him into the story without stopping it. He also gave the character his own unique personality. Omar Metwally is also known for his work on The Affair, which airs on Showtime.
Rich/Wolf Legarski (John Carroll Lynch)
Lynch co-stars with Ronald as one of the evilest characters, Rich Legarski, who blends himself into society to cover up the trafficking of young girls. Lynch then introduces Wolf, Rich’s twin brother, who believes he can teach Ronald the ‘correct way to live according to the rules he lives by. Both characters are disturbing, shocking, and superbly portrayed. Lynch is also known for his roles in The Trial of the Chicago Seven, Zodiac, and Gran Torino.
Jerrie Kennedy (Jesse James Keitel)
Jerrie Kennedy is a survivor of Ronald’s crimes, but she is not defined by her status as his target; instead, she becomes an extremely likable member of the team, assisting Cassie and Jenny in bringing him down. Jerrie, played by Jesse James Keitel, who can also be seen in Younger and Miller & Son, is an inspirational character (and one of the few non-binary roles on primetime TV), overcoming life-threatening trauma. She didn’t let it ruin her life, and she decides to turn it into a positive in order to help with more work.
Denise Brisbane (Dedee Pfeiffer)
Dedee Pfeiffer plays Denise Brisbande in Big Sky, but you may recognize her from her extensive TV work on shows like ER, Supernatural, and CSI. The unit in Big Sky wouldn’t be the same without office manager Denise, who keeps everything running smoothly while Cassie and Jenny are out looking for justice. Pfeiffer does an excellent job of shaping Denise’s personality — she’s quirky, fierce, and organized, and it’s difficult to imagine how everyone would manage without her (or that the show would be as entertaining).
Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty)
Most viewers won’t understand what it’s like to truly despise a TV character until they meet Ronald Pergman. Brian Geraghty, best known for his roles in Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, and Chicago Fire, as well as Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile, has recently demonstrated his abilities and does an excellent job of bringing the true meaning of creepy to life. He’s certainly talented, portraying Ronald, one of the most heinous characters ever created.
Ronald is a talented killer in Big Sky, as we learn throughout season one how he manages to keep his victims under control while blending into society and living happily ever after. However, he is not as astute as Jenny and Cassie, and his life unravels before his eyes. Ronald is completely disturbing and creepy, but incredibly intriguing.
Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury)
