This article has spoilers for the 17th episode of Season 6 of This Is Us.
Season 6, episode 17 of This Is Us, which is the second-to-last episode of Dan Fogelman’s popular family drama, celebrates the circle of life by telling the stories of Rebecca, the Pearson family matriarch, and Dr. Marcus Brooks, an Alzheimer’s disease researcher who was a boy in the same hospital as Jack Pearson the night he died.
Both stories are about the death of Rebecca, who was the family matriarch, and Dr. Brooks’s rare scientific breakthrough.
Who Is Marcus Brooks On This Is Us?
In the first episode scene, Marcus and his family are in the car. This is the first time we see young Marcus. Marcus is in the back seat between his sister and brother, and before we know it, the family car is in an accident.
We meet an adult Marcus in the present day. He walks with a cane and works in a lab. He is upset that he can’t find a way to cure cancer.
Literally, the worst part is that the money for his research is being cut.
But in a flash forward, it’s shown that when Marcus was older, he was a “pioneer in the development of drugs targeting Alzheimer’s,” with his cancer research helping him be successful.
How Is Marcus Connected To The Pearson Family?
Marcus’s story may seem a little random, especially in the episode before the very emotional last one. But by the end of the hour, everything started making sense.
A young Marcus is in critical condition and undergoing surgery in a scene that takes place the night after the car accident that killed his family. His family is waiting for him anxiously at the hospital, and Marcus’s father leaves for a moment to get some coffee. And who does he meet while he’s on this trip? Jack, whose clothes have been burned and are black with soot.
Marcus’s accident happened the same night as the famous Pearson fire.
Jack tells Marcus’s father that his house burned down, and Marcus’s father tells Jack that he just had the worst night of his life. Then, Jack gives him some advice, which we’ll discuss later, and the two men go their separate ways. Of course, Jack has a massive heart attack and dies just a few minutes later.
In the meantime, a young man named Marcus gets better and has a successful surgery simultaneously with Jack.
In the present, we see the Brooks siblings laughing about a family motto their father made: something about lemons and lemonade. Fans knew that when one of Jack and Rebecca’s triplets didn’t make it, Dr. K (Gerald McRaney) told them,
“There is no lemon so sour that you can’t make something that looks like lemonade.” This could only mean that Jack gave Marcus’s father the same advice on a stormy night for both families.
Why Did Marcus Brooks’ Story Appear On This Is Us?
In an interview with People, the show’s creator, Dan Fogelman, said that he had always planned to add another family whose life was similar to that of the Pearsons.
Fogelman said, “I always thought that the second-to-last episode would tell the story of another person, maybe a child, who had survived at the same time that Jack had been lost in a way that would surprise people.” “It’s an important part of the show.”
He continued, “So, on the night that the family’s beloved patriarch died, Jack advised the family of a child who was saved that night that helped a whole other family he barely knew.” It was essential to include that story in this episode.
Fans saw that Jack said nice things to the family of a man who would later help find a cure for Alzheimer’s, which is what killed Rebecca years later. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the past six seasons of This Is Us, it’s that nothing ever happens by chance.
Fans Discuss Marcus’s Arrival
Marcus’s story took some turns and twists in Episode 17, but the last thing we learned about him has gotten much attention from This Is Us fans.
One Twitter user said, “The doctor felt terrible when Jack died because he left him to help the kid” (Marcus). But if he hadn’t gone to Marcus, Marcus would have died, and Alzheimer’s wouldn’t have been cured. “This Show Is God.”
Another person said, “Marcus Brooks is working to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.” I can’t get in any way. “Only these writers could make us cry over a character we’ve only known for five minutes.”
“Marcus worked on Alzheimer’s research?” “Yeah, I’m not okay,” this fan said.
This person on Twitter said, “What an amazing story about Marcus and his family!” Another Big Three with himself, his siblings, and his parents And to know that his work on Alzheimer’s worked out well Perfection.”
This fan said that the scene where Jack died, but Marcus lived was heartbreaking: “The fact that Jack died and Marcus lived at the same time has me broken.”
And finally, this Twitter user said, “Jack died so that Marcus could be saved so that Marcus could eventually help fight Alzheimer’s, which was mostly because of his family’s motto, which Jack passed on the night he died.”
