Wentz Injury: Does He Need Four-to-Six Weeks To Recover?

The Commanders may need to get ready for the next few weeks without quarterback Carson Wentz. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network said that Washington’s starting quarterback would need four to six weeks to heal from a broken ring finger on his throwing hand. Reports say that the team is thinking about putting Wentz on injured reserve, which would keep him out of action for at least four weeks.

Rapoport says that Wentz, who is 29 years old, is in Los Angeles on Monday to meet with a hand specialist.  Wentz may have hurt his arm when his right arm hit Bears defender Justin Jones while he was trying to throw a pass during Thursday night’s win over the Bears. He seemed to be in a lot of pain for the rest of the night, but the injury wasn’t thought to be too bad because he finished the game and helped Washington win 12–7.

After one season with the Colts, Wentz was traded to the Nationals and has had a pretty up-and-down start with his third NFL team. The former No. 2 pick has thrown for 1,489 yards and ten touchdowns in six games. He has also thrown six interceptions and lost one fumble.

The Commanders have begun the years 2–4. Washington hasn’t said what it would do at quarterback if Wentz is out for a long time, but Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer says backup Taylor Heinicke is likely to take over. Ron Rivera’s team is getting ready for a Week 7 game against the Packers on Sunday afternoon. Rookie Sam Howell could also play at quarterback.
