A appearance from Paramount’s horrible original concept for Sonic the Hedgehog is the last thing anyone expects from Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Yet here we are, with many instances in which Ugly Sonic wonderfully exemplifies the lunacy of cameo culture while simultaneously lampooning celebrity society in general. I haven’t been confused by a crossover since Angela Anaconda invaded the Digimon: The Movie beginning. It’s certainly an unusual way to end the week.
In an era when films are praised on the number of cameos they can get in and how excited they can get spectators, the idea of leveraging one of the worst designs in modern film history as a hook to your film is really brilliant. It not only demonstrates that we are thrilled about anything we recognize having a cameo in a film (something I am guilty of), but it also demonstrates how ludicrous the idea is.

Tim Robinson, the writer and actor of I Think You Should Leave, plays Ugly Sonic to perfection. Sonic has a full booth with images showing off his range in the scenario where he appears, and he talks about the time the internet saw his human teeth and “burned the house down.” It’s fine, though, because he’s working on a very cool reality programme.

Not only does Ugly Sonic make an appearance in the film, but so do a slew of other animated characters. In some ways, it’s a modern-day Who Framed Roger Rabbit? “Getting a number of third-party cartoons was super-important to me,” Schaffer told Polygon, “because if this is going to be some type of celebration of animation, it can’t simply be a celebration of Disney animation.”
