Stranger Things fans are celebrating a historic day because the show has returned for its fourth season after nearly three years of absence. (The first seven episodes are now available online, with two more coming on July 1.)
While fans eagerly await the new episodes, one critical question remains: when will Season 5 be released?
The creators of the hit science fiction series, the Duffer Brothers, announced in February that the upcoming fifth season will be the series’ final season.
Despite the fact that filming on the latest season was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the brothers stated in a new interview with Variety that the gap between the fourth and fifth seasons will be significantly smaller.

Stranger Things Season 5 will be released in 2023, according to Netflix. Stranger Things Season 4, Part 1 debuted on Netflix early Friday morning, whetting our appetites for the fifth and final season of their popular Netflix series. The Part 2 finale (which airs on Friday, July 1) will “dovetail directly” into the show’s final season, according to our sister site Variety.
“During the six-month epidemic pause, we outlined Season 5 and offered it to Netflix,” they continued. “Everyone who was present was present when we first pitched the show in 2015.” We were strangers before, but we became friends quickly, and there were many tears when it was over.”

That conclusion, for better or worse, will come sooner rather than later. “Don’t hold us to it,” they said, “but the gap [between Seasons 4 and 5] should be much smaller this time because we already have an initial framework in place and we don’t expect another six-month forced sabbatical.”
Stranger Things Season 5 Storyline
There’s no way to know for sure because the final two episodes of Stranger Things 4 have yet to air.
Vecna’s origins, background, and connection to Eleven have all been revealed to viewers. It’s unclear whether his story will continue in Season 5, but the threat of the Upside Down will undoubtedly loom over Hawkins throughout the season.
