Even though Halloween is long over, that doesn’t mean we must stop loving scary icons. Horror movies like “Nope” and “Barbarian” are still causing a stir, and the video for “Evil Dead Rise” was just released. This shows that scary and macabre movies still scare moviegoers.
Now, a new movie may be more of a horror comedy than a straight-up horror movie, but it still looks like it will be a classic. Renfield, a new comedy about the main goon who works for Dracula, is coming to theatres soon. Its video just came out today.
Even though some things about the movie are being kept secret, here’s what we know.
Renfield: Release Date Details
Universal Pictures plans to release Renfield on April 14, 2023. It will be shown in theatres.
This means there are only a few weeks left until the movie comes out, so if you want to read the book or watch any other versions, now is the time to start.
How Closely Will Renfield Follow The Plot Of Dracula?
In Dracula, a book written by Bram Stoker in 1897, Jonathan Harker goes to Transylvania to make a real estate deal for the old Count, but he barely escapes the evil immortal’s grasp. The prominent people in the story are Jonathan, his fiancee Mina, and Van Helsing, who hunts vampires. Even though he has been in over 20 movies, R.N. Renfield is just a minor character in the original story. He is a patient in a mental hospital who eats bugs and rats to get their life force. In fact, Renfield is the typical vampire familiar. Even though Count Dracula tells him he will live forever, he hesitates to do what he wants.
Renfield’s movie is not a straight copy of the book. Instead, he uses the book as a starting point for a new take on the original story. Renfield, who is sick of his toxic, codependent relationship with Dracula that has lasted for ages, is the main character in this story. Renfield moves to modern-day New Orleans to start a new life. His life gets more complicated when he falls in love with a sassy traffic cop and gets in trouble with some mobsters. Still, he has to deal with Dracula, who is always demanding and possessive. He is an absolute boss from hell who shows no sign of changing his ways.
The movie has been called “violent comedy” and “oddball horror.” It is said to have been partly inspired by Taika Waititi’s mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows, which is about vampires, and great horror-comedy films like An American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead II, and Shaun of the Dead.
Who Is Making Renfield? What Is The Dark Universe?
In recent years, Universal Studios tried to bring back and update their most famous Golden Age movie monsters (like Dracula, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Wolfman, etc.) by making movies set in an interconnected world called The Dark World. Things went wrong quickly, though. The version of The Mummy with Tom Cruise in 2017 bombed just as severely as The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro in 2010. Only The Invisible Man, which came out in 2020 and was made by the famous horror studio Blumhouse productions, did well with critics.
Now, Renfield is up against a script written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) based on a treatment by Robert Kirkman. Redeeming the Dark Universe will be challenging, but will it really add anything new to Dracula’s long list of accomplishments? Christopher McKay, who directed The Lego Batman Movie and The Tomorrow War, agreed to direct the movie. He will also produce it with his producing partner Samantha Nisenboim and Skybound Entertainment’s David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst. We asked McKay how he was going to handle the job, and he said:
“I fell in love with the character of Renfield and his relationship with Dracula. Renfield is basically a guy who wants to get out of this bad relationship and doesn’t know how—he’s been in this relationship for 93 years, and he wants to get out of it. I looked at this as an opportunity because it has a lot of black comedy in it, there’s a lot of action in it, and there’s a little bit of suspense and drama in it too. So that, to me, seemed like a really fun combination. It’s not something that comes around the table very often. Something that’s obviously still tied to one of the oldest IPs in the world and probably one of the most filmed IPs in the world when you look at it. Dracula’s probably up there with Sherlock Holmes and Hamlet as far as literary characters that you see in movie after movie.”

Will Anyone Eat A Bug In Renfield?
Dracula has been in more than 200 movies, but Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee are best known for playing him in the 1930s and 1940s and the 1960s and 1970s, respectively. But over 20 other actors, like John Carradine, Frank Langella, Louis Jordan, Gary Oldman, Gerard Butler, Luke Evans, Leslie Nielsen, and Morgan Freeman on the kids’ show The Electric Company, have played the undead count. Over the last 100 years, Dracula’s character has changed from a scary, wild monster in Nosferatu (1922) to an elegant, sexy, and weirdly sorry aristocrat in the recent BBC Series. So, what could any actor, even Nicolas Cage, bring to a part that is already so well-known?
In fact, Cage has recently gotten more attention and praise from critics. This isn’t because he’s changed; Cage still plays a unique version of himself in every movie he’s in. Instead, it’s because people like his over-the-top, almost comical acting style more now. Also, Cage’s eagerness to talk about (and sometimes make fun of) how he prepares for his parts with “nouveau shamanism” has brought him new attention and respect for his skills. And this isn’t the first time Cage has played a monster. In 1989, he was in the movie Vampire’s Kiss, which didn’t do well at the box office and became a cult favorite, partly because Nicolas Cage famously ate a live cockroach on screen. (he actually ate another bug for a second take; the director wanted to be sure he got the shot right). This, along with the fact that Cage had to settle for a cockroach instead of a real bat, only added to the legend of his weird behavior off-screen and his strange acting style, which was affected by the Method.
But will Cage’s new vampire part be as good as the first one he played? Reports say that the actor was influenced by silent film stars, his father August Coppola, David Bowie, and Anne Bancroft in The Graduate when he played the Count. So, we don’t know if anyone will eat a live bug on screen, but fans of Cage’s weird and unique acting styles probably won’t be upset.
Will Renfield Get a Sequel?
No one knows when we’ll see Dracula and Renfield again, but Nicolas Cage is willing to play the part again. We asked the actor if he would be ready to play the famous vampire again, and he said, “Yes, I would.”
If there’s room for it. I mean, I’m happy with the time that I had to play Dracula for Universal in this film, and I’m very happy I got to support Nic [Hoult]. I’ve been wanting to work with him for a while again. You know, I enjoyed our time on The Weather Man. I think it plays beautifully. I think what he brought to this character is totally brand new, and I’m very happy to be a part of that.
Is There A Renfield Trailer Yet?
On January 5, 2023, the first video for Renfield was put up online. The video gives us a good idea of how funny the movie is. There’s also a lot of bloodshed, Cage-like behavior, and eating bugs to see. We got the last preview for Renfield on March 22, 2023.
In this video, we find out about an unexpected turn of events. Renfield falls in love with a traffic cop named Rebecca Quincy after working for Dracula for almost 100 years. (Awkwafina). This new change makes Renfield rethink his relationship with his boss, which gives him the courage to break up. Of course, that’s easier said than done when your boss is a dark lord. Below is the link to the last video for Renfield.
