If you’re curious about where the Home Alone house is in real life, how much it costs, or what it looks like today, this article provides a comprehensive history.
Home Alone, the cult classic comedy that made Macaulay Culkin one of the most recognizable child actors of all time, is as prevalent on television today as it was in November 1990, when it was first released.
The story of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, who is left behind by his family during the holidays and is forced to defend his home against two incompetent burglars, is arguably the greatest Christmas film of all time.
Today, “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” occurs around the time that Home Alone is rebroadcast on television for the millionth time.
Disney has released a new version of the holiday classic Home Sweet Home Alone, starring Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, and Archie Yates, which is now available to stream on Disney+.
The announcement of a new Home Alone film piqued the interest of fans all over the world, who pondered whether the remake could live up to the original.
Due to the failure of the sequels in which Macaulay did not star, many believed that only a Christmas miracle could enable Disney to meet fan expectations.
When the iconic film was released, however, not only Macaulay Culkin became a star.
The picture-perfect exterior and festive decorations of the McCallister residence have now become synonymous with the holiday spirit.
And it turns out that the beautiful family home in Home Alone is real (though possibly safer from dimwit bandits than its movie counterpart). So we just had to find it in real life.
Where Was Home Alone Filmed?
Most of the movie was filmed in Winnetka, Illinois, which is 16 miles outside of the Windy City and is where the Home Alone house is. The home’s brick exterior was used in the film, along with interior shots of the living room and the now-famous grand staircase in the foyer.
However, the Winnetka home was too small to accommodate all the interiors. “The entrance was far too small to accommodate the crew.” “Once, Columbus explained. Instead, many of Kevin’s home’s interiors were filmed at the abandoned New Trier Township High School in town. The filmmakers constructed a two-story set within the gymnasium.
The crew also filmed scenes just outside the home. “Because we could not afford to build the exterior of the house on a soundstage, all of the stunts that took place outside the house occurred at night. We would shoot from approximately 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.,” Columbus recalled.
For additional scenes, the production crew utilized local locations. Santa’s workshop and the grocery store scene were filmed in Winnetka, and Kevin bought his toothbrush at the actual Hubbard Woods Pharmacy in Winnetka.
Kevin visits two churches in the film: the exterior depicts a church in the nearby Chicago suburb of Wilmette, while the interiors are filmed in Oak Park. The O’Hare International Airport in Chicago was utilized for all airport scenes, including those in “Paris!”

How Much Does The Home Alone House Cost?
A suburban five-bedroom home in the Chicago metropolitan area is not inexpensive, even if it hasn’t appeared in a blockbuster film.

That is a little more expensive than the neighborhood’s median home price. Late in 2022, the median list price of homes in Winnetka, Illinois, was $1.5M, representing an annual increase of 3.5%.
The 60093 zip code is one of the most expensive in the Chicago area.
This may make you wonder what the McCallisters did for a living to be able to afford such a spacious and genuinely lovely family home.
Peter McCallister, Kevin’s father, was a prominent businessman (and some sources even claim he was a day trader), whereas Kate McCallister, Kevin’s mother, was a fashion designer.
Her profession also explains why Kevin had so many mannequins to use during the party scene.
Due to their lucrative careers, the couple could easily afford the 5-bedroom home in the desirable Chicago suburb.
