Matlin was born on August 24, 1965. She is an American actress, author, and activist. In 1987, Matlin won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Sarah Norman in the romantic drama film Children of a Lesser God. The parents of Matlin were Libby (née Hammer) and Donald Matlin, who sold cars. He was born in Morton Grove, Illinois. Due to sickness and fevers, Matlin lost all of her hearing in her right ear at the age of 18 months. She also lost about 80% of her hearing in her left ear. In her book, I’ll Scream Later, she says that her hearing loss may have been caused by a cochlea that was genetically wrong. She is the only person in her family who can’t hear. She has a sense of humor about being deaf: “People often ask me how I can hear them through my speakerphone after about 10 minutes or so. In a show at the International Center on Deafness and the Arts (ICODA), Matlin made her stage debut at the age of seven, when she played Dorothy in a show about The Wizard of Oz. She kept performing with the ICODA kids’ theatre group through her childhood. For an essay called “If I Were Not a Movie Star,” she won second place in the Chicago Center’s Annual International Creative Arts Festival when she was just 13. In one of her ICODA theatre performances, Henry Winkler saw her. This led to her movie debut in Children of a Lesser God, which was based on the book by the same name (1986).
