Mamma Mia! has become a worldwide musical sensation. It started on the stage with a touching story written by Catherine Johnson and sing-along songs by ABBA. The rom-com success opened in London’s West End in 1999. In 2008, it was turned into a movie, which became as big a hit as the song it was named after, making an estimated $611 million worldwide on a $52 million budget.
Mamma Mia didn’t do so well in the ratings; critics only gave it a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has a loyal fan group and many things have contributed to its success. Along with a touching story, a summery setting, and catchy songs from Sweden’s pop royalty, the acting is spectacular, with stars like Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski…whew.
Fans had to wait ten years for Mamma Mia 2, which was called (of course) Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, but it finally came out in 2018. Even though it didn’t make as much money as the first one, it still made $402.3 million. Many people thought it was a better movie because of the flashier dancing scenes and Lily James’s standout performance as young Donna and Cher. Since a third movie is being discussed, here’s what we know about Mamma Mia 3.
Mamma Mia 3: Release Date Details
Currently, there is no official release date for Mamma Mia 3. However, if production starts in 2023, the movie could be released in July 2024. The previous two films were released in July, so it is unlikely that they would move away from that. Mamma Mia 3 has not been officially confirmed yet, but producer Judy Craymer has stated that she always plans for it to be a trilogy.
Plot Details Of Mamma Mia 3
Mamma Mia 3 has yet to have an official plot. Still, since Sophie and Donna’s relationship as mother and daughter won’t be a focus anymore, the movie could go in many different ways.
Instead, the threequel could look at Sophie’s relationship with her new son or how Donna and her mum, played by Cher, used to be. Or it could make the story about Sky and his past.
Lily James had other thoughts when she talked to the Radio Times after Here We Go Again came out. She said, “We laughed that it could be Mamma Mia! The test of DNA. You find out who the father is at last.”
But Amanda Seyfried thinks the story can be explained sparingly. “What does it matter? “At this point, the plot doesn’t even matter,” she told Variety. “ABBA has new songs, so put them in. Get the actors back together. Meryl will come back for sure for the whole thing. Or else.”

Mamma Mia 3: Cast Details
If Mamma Mia 3 happens, there’s no question that it will have another star-studded cast since many familiar faces have said they want to play their roles again.
Craymer hinted at this when she told Deadline she had found a way to bring back all the fan-favorite groups and characters.
- Meryl Streep as Donna
- Pierce Brosnan as Sam
- Colin Firth as Harry
- Stellan Skarsgård as Bill
- Christine Baranski as Tanya
- Julie Walters as Rosie
- Amanda Seyfried as Sophie
- Dominic Cooper as Sky
- Rachel McDowall as Lisa
- Ricardo Montez as Stannos
- Mia Soteriou as Arina
- Philip Michael as Pepper
- Niall Buggy as Father Alex
- Ashley Lilley as Ali
- Cher as Ruby
Since we’ve already been to the past in the second movie, it needs to be clarified if any of the characters from when they were kids will be in the third movie. Given how well Lily James did as the young Donna, we can’t say for sure that it won’t happen.
In the first movie, Seyfried plays Donna’s daughter and the bride-to-be. She is not saying no. Earlier this year, she told Entertainment Tonight, “I have no power, but we are waiting for the call.” Do you get what I’m getting at? Judy Craymer agrees that there are enough ABBA songs for everyone. I have no idea what the people at Universal are up to.”
Dominic Cooper, who plays Sophie’s husband Sky, told Collider last year that he’s “not sure,” adding, “I did send a text to the producer right away when that album got such good reviews, and I’d heard a couple of the songs.” I thought, “Wow, that’s great!” They’re making new songs once more! Excellent!’ Who knows, though? “I’m not sure.”
Brosnan is also interested. In October 2022, he told Good Morning America, “I’m in, too. Sure. How much fun you have watching that movie is wrong. I believe everyone would be, “There must be some plans.”
But, and this is a tease for Mamma Mia 2, there is a big question over whether Streep will return as Donna.
Even though her character was a big part of the first two films, fans will know she died at the end of the third one. But Craymer did say that the star “should come back,” which means they could find a way for Donna to show up, like as a ghost or in flashbacks.
We might also see some new faces, but we can only wait for now. When further information comes in, we’ll keep this part current.
Mamma Mia 3 Songs: What ABBA Songs Will Be In Mamma Mia 3?
Since “Mamma Mia” is in the title, it’s clear that we’ll need to hear it again for this series to go on in a good way. Some great ABBA songs have been used as touchstones in both films so far and could be used again:
• ‘Dancing Queen’
• ‘I Have a Dream
• ‘The Name of the Game
• ‘Super Trouper’
• ‘Waterloo’
The original Mamma Mia also contained the following ABBA songs:
• ‘Chiquitita’
• ‘Does Your Mother Know’
• ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’
• ‘Honey, Honey’; ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do
• ‘Lay All Your Love on Me
• ‘Money, Money, Money
• ‘Our Last Summer
• ‘Slipping Through My Fingers
• ‘SOS’
• ‘Take a Chance on Me
• ‘Thank You for the Music
• ‘The Winner Takes It All
• ‘Voulez-Vous’
• ‘When All Is Said and Done
Meanwhile, Mamma Mia 2 added these ABBA songs:
• ‘Andante, Andante’
• ‘Angel Eyes’
• ‘Fernando’
• ‘I Wonder (Departure)’
• ‘I’ve Been Waiting for You
• ‘Kisses of Fire’
• ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You
• ‘My Love, My Life
• ‘One of Us’
• ‘The Day Before You Came’
• ‘When I Kissed the Teacher
• ‘Why Did It Have to Be Me?’
No one knows yet what other songs might be in the threequel. Don’t worry, though. If a third movie is made, there are still a lot of ABBA songs that could be used.
No matter what we choose, Cher will be happy to sing more ABBA hits for us to enjoy.
