Joker 2 Release Date: Joker 2 in Work, Cast, Plot and Many More

Entertainment Movies

The Joker might have overlooked and dismissed, but that was not the case with his 2019 film. Todd Phillips’ take on the villain’s origin story captivated audiences around the world, earning him several Oscar nominations, including one for Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor. Given Joker’s enormous box office success and award nominations, it’s understandable that a sequel will be on everyone’s mind.

Despite the fact that it’s been more than two years since Phoenix’s Joker wreaked havoc on Gotham City, Joker 2 could still happen. Here’s everything we know so far about the eagerly awaited sequel.

Joker 2 Status?

A sequel to Joker is reportedly in the works.

The Joker was supposed to be a one-off film with no sequels, but the first film leaves the door open for more.

While director Todd Phillips has stated categorically that “we have no plan for a sequel,” that the film is “not set up” for a sequel, and that they “pitched it as one movie,” the first film ends with Arthur escaping from a therapy session at Arkham State Hospital, leaving bloody footsteps in his wake and many questions unanswered.

When Batman’s parents are shot and killed in an alley by a rioter when Gotham City is overrun with chaos, and Arthur’s obsession with Sophie are both untold parts of the story that could be expanded on in a new film (Zazie Beetz).

Phillips hinted that he and Phoenix had “bounced around ideas” about a sequel to The Joker, but claimed that they had done so while filming the first movie “because that’s what you do sometimes.”

After rumours surfaced in 2020 that he was in talks, The Hollywood Reporter reported in May 2021 that Phillips had “struck a deal to co-write the next Joker instalment.”

Philips worked on the original Joker as a co-writer and director, so it’s not surprising that he’d be involved in the sequel’s script.

However, it’s unclear whether he’ll also be directing this time, or who his co-writer will be – though Scott Silver from the first film is a likely candidate.

What’s Joker 2 Plot & Cast?joker2

The first film was intended to be a stand-alone origin story that shed new light on one of cinema’s most enduring villains. Thanks to Phoenix’s committed performance, Joker painted a pained but complex portrait of the character. Having said that, the film’s open ending allows the story to expand on the world it has created. Joker 2 could take on a variety of stories, and with few details available about the project, it’s difficult to predict where Phillips will take the story next.

Meanwhile, in other DC universes, such as Jared Leto’s version of the character in Suicide Squad and Barry Keoghan’s recent iteration in The Batman, Warner Bros. is still putting the Joker in action with different actors portraying the antagonist. It may appear confusing because these films were released relatively close together and set out to tell separate stories about the same character. It may not matter where Phoenix’s Joker fits into all of this, but it will be fascinating to see how this particular film series continues to reimagine the villain.

Joaquin Phoenix will almost certainly reprise his Oscar-winning role as the Joker in Joker 2. Phoenix has expressed interest in reprising his role as the Joker, but only in the right circumstances. If Todd Phillips returns to direct the sequel, it’s possible that Phoenix will agree to reteam with the writer-director for Joker 2.

While many of the supporting characters from Joker died tragically young, we can expect plenty of new faces and some familiar DC characters in the film, including possibly a young Bruce Wayne.
