Werewolf by Night is an MCU Disney+ Halloween special based on the same-named comic book series. Two fictional werewolves appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics under the title “The Werewolf by Night.” Werewolf by Night (also known as The Werewolf) made his first appearance in Marvel Spotlight #2. (February 1972). Variety speculates that the Disney+ Halloween special will feature one of two characters: Jack Russell or Jake Gomez.
The Hollywood Reporter is even more mysterious, claiming that the special will not be titled Werewolf by Night “by the time the special airs on Disney+ later this year,” though this is not the case. This one is being played close to the vest by Disney+. Filming wrapped in April, and while no production photos have surfaced, here’s what we know so far.
Werewolf By Night Premiere Date
Werewolf by Night, as announced at D23, will be available to stream on Disney+ beginning October 7, 2022.
Werewolf By Night Cast
Gael Garca Bernal, who played Jack Russell in Coco, leads the cast as the titular Werewolf by Night. Laura Donnelly, who plays Elsa Bloodstone, joins him as a major supporting character in the lycanthrope’s rampage.
Harriet Sansom Harris (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) plays Verusa, Eugenie Bondurant (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) plays Linda, Kirk R. Thatcher (Gremlins 2: The New Batch) plays Jovan, and Al Hamacher (True Memoirs of an International Assassin) plays Billy Swan.
No actor has yet been cast as Man-Thing, most likely because the character does not speak and we will not see him in his human form, but there will undoubtedly be some spooky surprises in store for the Halloween special.
Werewolf By Night Plot
Is it Jake or Jack? Rumors and leaks abound on the internet, including the Reddit subreddit r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers. These were just wild guesses, but with a little more investigation, it’s possible that at least some of these alleged elements are true.
Industry publications were careful not to reveal too much information about Jack Russell and Jake Gomez. With the trailer release during D23, we now know which werewolf we’ll be getting. According to available information and the trailer’s captioning, Gael Garcia Bernal will play Jack Russell.
Jack Russell is a member of the mysteriously transformed race known as Lycanthropes. He is compelled to morph into a werewolf, a large, powerful hybrid of human and wolf. During the night of the full moon and the two nights surrounding it, he loses his human mind.
He can also mutate freely outside of the full moon if he keeps control of himself under certain conditions. Jack possesses the proportionate physical advantages of a wolf nearly 7 feet tall. In this form, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes. He has a phenomenal sense of smell in both his human and superhuman forms.
This does not preclude Jake from having his own film or appearing in this one in the future. Jake Gomez, a second iteration of the character, was introduced by Marvel in the previous year’s Werewolf by Night (Vol. 3) #1.
Gomez, a Hopi Native American tribe member whose family has been cursed with lycanthropy, clashes with a dishonest pharmaceutical corporation that abuses tribe members. Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff, and Scot Eaton created the most recent comic book.
Who is the creator of Werewolf by Night?
As previously stated, Michael Giacchino will make his directorial debut, with Kevin Feige serving as executive producer. While clearly inspired by classic monster movies, Giacchino cited childhood-scarring classics such as Poltergeist (1982) as influences and promised that the special will really turn up the scares for fans looking for something with a bit more grit.
Peter Cameron (Moon Knight) and Heather Quinn, both Marvel Studios veterans, are also co-writing the film (Hawkeye). Zo White is also the cinematographer (Westworld).
