Succession will end after its fourth season (cue the internal meltdown). When you’re done with denial, anger and any other stages of grief you’re going through because of this news, come over here and we’ll ask, “But WHY?! ” in a calm, grown-up way.
In an interview with The New Yorker, the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, said that he had decided to end the show “You know, the title of Succession makes a promise. I never thought that this would last forever. I’ve always been kind of aware of the end. I’ve been trying to figure out since season 2 if it’s the next one, the one after that, or the one after that.”
Armstrong said that he talked to the writers of season 4 about making it the last part of the Roy family’s story. This was before they started writing the script. “And we tried different ideas, like doing a few short or two more seasons. Or, we could keep going for a long time and change the show into something else. It could be a more random, freewheeling kind of fun show where some weeks are good and some are bad, “Armstrong said to the New Yorker. “Or, we could do something a little stronger and more full and start off pretty strong. And that was always my first choice.”
HBO shows haven’t always ended on a high note (I’m looking at you, Game of Thrones and Entourage), so even though it’s sad that we won’t be getting more seasons of Succession, the reason is understandable.

Still, there is one tiny bit of hope for those who want more. Armstrong firmly said, “There could be something else in an allied world, allied characters, or some of the same characters.” If you tell me there might be a Greg spinoff, I’ll start making room in my schedule immediately to watch it as soon as it comes out. But until then, we’ll have to sit back and enjoy season 4, which starts on Sunday, March 26, at 9 pm ET.
The end of Season 3 was very tense because the Roy kids worked together to beat up their dad, but Logan was able to beat them with a bit of help from Tom. Tensions are high everywhere, but especially for Shiv, since almost everyone in her life has now betrayed her. As for what we can expect in season 4, the sale of Waystar Royco is going full steam ahead, and the family is getting even more divided. So much thought has gone into making this the best season ever, so I can’t wait to find out how it all ends.
