The physically gorgeous film that is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also happens to be deeply philosophical. Directed by Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos, the sequel to 2018’s (Into the Spider-Verse) Miles Morales film is a visual extravaganza that feels lifted straight out of a comic book. With its exciting premise, the film takes the audience on a wild voyage across several worlds and eras, where they meet hundreds of Spider-people.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cast: The film features an impressive cast, including Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Daniel Kaluuya, Issa Rea, Oscar Issac, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jason Schwartzman, Karan Soni, Luna Lauren Velez, Shea Wigham, and Andy Samberg. Lord, Miller, and Callaham wrote the screenplay.

The film opens with some exposition on Earth-65’s Gwen Stacy (Steinfeld), called Spider-Gwen, and the origins of her powers and what became of Peter Parker there. Her police officer father, George (Whigham), believes his daughter, Spider-Gwen, is a criminal. Miles Morales of Earth-1610 has perfected his superpowers and become the world’s most famous Spider-Man, but his relationship with his parents, Jefferson (Henry) and Rio (Valez), is deteriorating. Gwen and Miles have had difficulty connecting with others and have often thought of reuniting, which they do under somewhat sad circumstances. Still, they have no idea that they are going through comparable issues.
Gwen can escape her universe with the help of Jessica Drew (Rae), alias Spider-Woman, and Miguel O’ Hara (Isaac), nicknamed Spider-Man 2099, who recruit her to help them keep an eye out for Spot (Schwartzman), a villain from Earth-1610, and other multiverse abnormalities. After meeting Gwen, Pavitr Prabhakar (Soni), as Spider-Man India, and Hobie Brown (Kaluuya), aka Spider-Punk, Morales starts to uncover the truth about his hero past and place in the Spider-Verse.
The film’s dedication to realism sets it distinct from other superhero fare. The movie has a natural affection for the source material, from the comic book panel, transitions to the exciting action scenes. It’s more than a movie; it’s a tribute to everyone who’s ever enjoyed Spider-Man in a Marvel comic or graphic novel. Watercolour animation is a gleaming mix that ebbs and flows to create something fresh and exciting. It’s a significant improvement over the last one because of the vibrant colours and hand-painted look of the backgrounds. This adds a new dimension to the film’s plot while raising the stakes. Rotten Tomatoes also praised the film’s chemistry and creativity.
Rotten Tomatoes has given it a score of 97% based on 32 reviews

Amid alternate dimensions and Spider-Man battles, Across the Spider-Verse, examines the idea of free will. This idea is embodied by Morales, whose development is not tied to the passage of time or the acquisition of new abilities but rather to his own deliberate decisions. His struggle with fate and the expectations of others is universally exciting and touching. Through this, the spectator also learns about his upbringing and how he became connected to his Puerto Rican roots. The subject gives the film a sense of purpose and depth, elevating the high-octane action.

Despite its many technical achievements, the story might sometimes be challenging to follow. The plot becomes tangled up as it tries to include multiple dimensions into the account, making it the audience’s job to figure out how everything fits together in this Spider-Verse. There are a lot of characters, and it can be tough to keep track of all the little nuances (especially if you don’t know anything about comic books). However, the film’s ambition pays off, providing a nuanced interpretation of courage and fate for those who stick with it.
