Ghostface is making a comeback in Scream 7, which is currently being made. Here’s what we know about the movie so far, including who’s directing it, the story, the actors, and when it might come out.
When the first Scream movie came out in 1996, it was a big hit because it mixed scary stuff, humor, and clever commentary. It also introduced Ghostface, who has become a famous horror villain.
Earlier this year, Scream 6, also known as Scream VI, featuring Jenna Ortega, did really well with both critics and at the box office. It got a high rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and made a lot of money.
Even though there have been different writers, directors, and people playing Ghostface in the Scream movies, the series is still going strong. Now, they’re working on the seventh movie, and here’s what we know about it so far.
Scream 7 Release Date
Scream 7 is currently in the early stages of development, and there’s no set release date for the movie yet. However, it might take some time before it’s released because of the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.
There are rumors that Scream 7 is being filmed in Canada, starting in early 2024, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

The previous movie in the series, Scream 6, was announced in February 2022 and was released in March 2023, which was quite a quick turnaround.
Before that, information about the fifth movie in the Scream series was revealed in March 2020. However, it didn’t come out until January 2022 because it faced delays due to the pandemic.
Even though COVID-19 restrictions in the film industry have eased, there are still strikes happening among the writers and actors in Hollywood. This means that many major studio projects, including Scream 7, have been put on hold until an agreement is reached.
Scream 7 Crew
One big question is which actors from the famous cast will be in the seventh Scream movie. Courteney Cox is likely to be in it because she plays Gale Weathers and is also involved in making the Scream movies.
Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding are expected to return because their characters survived the last two films. Hayden Panettiere might also come back as FBI Agent Kirby Reed. However, three important actors from the Scream series won’t be in the seventh movie.
Melissa Barrera was let go from Scream 7, and there’s controversy about it. The studio says it’s because of some hateful comments she made, but some fans think she’s being punished for supporting Palestine on social media.
Neve Campbell, who didn’t appear in Scream 6, had a dispute with the studio over fair pay. With the actors’ strike exposing issues in how studios treat actors, it’s uncertain if she’ll return for future Scream movies.
Jenna Ortega has a busy schedule with other movies and TV shows, like Beetlejuice 2 and Wednesday season 2. She confirmed she won’t be in Scream 7.
Interestingly, scheduling conflicts caused problems during the making of Scream 3, and it led to the writer Kevin Williamson leaving the project and Neve Campbell not being able to be with the rest of the cast for most of the film.
Scream 7 Cast: Who’s in the Movie?
We can count on the four main actors from the sixth movie to come back because they all barely escaped from Ghostface. These four are:
- Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter
- Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter
- Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin
- Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin

It’s very probable that Courteney Cox will return as Gale Weathers. She’s been in all the Scream movies, and she made it through the events of the sixth one. The same goes for Hayden Panettiere’s character, Kirby Reed, who faced Ghostface in the movie Scream 4 in 2011.
Regarding new actors being picked for roles, there’s a rumor that Sophie Thatcher might be chosen for a part.

Scream 7 Plot: What’s It All About?
When it comes to making a Scream movie, there are some rules to follow. The new series is a mix of a reboot and a sequel, which means it’s very likely to include certain story elements from previous Scream movies.
In Scream (2022), they took inspiration from the original Scream (1996), and Scream 6 borrowed from Scream 2 (1997). So, in Scream 7, they’ll probably do something similar and reference Scream 3.
In Scream 3, the main character, Sidney Prescott, distanced herself from her friends and family because of the trauma she went through. But then, the killer forced her to come back, and it turned out to be a long-lost family member, her half-brother Roman Bridger.
The Scream requel series has already explored the idea of family, both the good and the bad. For example, Sam is the daughter of Billy Loomis, which has caused a lot of problems in her life, but she has a strong bond with her half-sister, Tara.
If they want to make the killer a secret family member in Scream 7, they have a few options. They could say that Billy Loomis had another secret child, or maybe Stu Macher or another previous Ghostface killer had a secret child. They could also use this opportunity to introduce Sam and Tara’s mother or stepfather as the killer. However, since some actors are not returning, this storyline might not happen.
In Scream 3, there’s a subplot about the cast of a movie called Stab 3, which is based on the “real” Ghostface killings. The killer in the movie goes after them one by one, following the order they die in the Stab script. Given how much Scream (2022) and Scream 6 referenced the Stab movies, it would make sense for Scream 7 to bring new life to the Stab franchise, just like the killers in 2022’s Scream wanted to do.
