Roman Cechmanek NHL Career
Roman Cechmanek, a Czech goaltender, had a stellar NHL career. From 1994 to 2000, he played with HC Vsetn in the Czech Republic before being drafted as the 171st overall pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.
He took up the starting job immediately away and had an outstanding first season that featured an All-Star Game appearance and a runner-up finish for the Vezina Trophy. Despite its early success, the team struggled in the playoffs, including a humiliating defeat to the Buffalo Sabres.
Cechmanek’s consistent performance in the following seasons was accompanied by a shared William M. Jennings Trophy and dissatisfaction with the Flyers’ offensive difficulties. Following a rough season with the Los Angeles Kings following his trade in 2002, he decided to return to the Czech Republic during the 2004-05 NHL season break. Cechmanek briefly played for Linkopings HC in 2007 after previously playing for the Hamburg Freezers and HC Karlovy Vary.
