Creating a prequel or spin-off is always a gamble, but American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy and Sarah Paulson hit the jackpot with their One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest remake. So, we’re hopeful that the predicted Ratched season 2 release date wasn’t just a pipe dream.
The film Ratched analyzed the development of the villainous Nurse Mildred Ratched, who became one of the most iconic film antagonists of all time. Ratched’s first season had the most viewership of any Netflix original series premiere that year. Then why isn’t the second season out yet?
Ratched Season 2 Release Date
As of now, there is no official release date for Season 2 of the show “Ratched,” and it’s unclear if it will even happen. Back in September 2017, Netflix announced that they were making two seasons of “Ratched” as part of a deal with the creator, Ryan Murphy. The show received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, but it did well in terms of viewership.
However, it didn’t reach the same level of success as some of Ryan Murphy’s other projects on Fox. Recently, Murphy found success with shows like “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “The Watcher” on Netflix.
In an interview in August 2022, actress Sarah Paulson, who plays the main character, revealed that she wasn’t sure if Season 2 was still in the works. To make things more complicated, Ryan Murphy left Netflix for Disney, which happened in June 2023. This move raises questions about the future of not just “Ratched” but also Murphy’s other Netflix projects.
Ratched Season 2 Expected Cast
Season 2 of Ratched may also feature returns from Sarah Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, and Finn Wittrock. No formal cast list has been released.
However, we can hazard a guess!
A portion of characters met their terrible demise in season 1, but those who survived will return. Some characters may have been murdered off, however, due to the two-year time leap at the end of season 1.
Season 2 of Ratched has the following potential cast members:
- Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched
- Vincent D’Onofrio as Governor George Willburn
- Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs
- Finn Wittrock as Edmund Tolleson
- Jermaine Williams as Harold
- Annie Starke as Lily Cartwright
- Brandon Flynn as Henry Osgood
- Amanda Plummer as Louise
- Michael Benjamin Washington as Trevor Briggs
- Sophie Okonedo as Charlotte Wells
What Will Happen in Ratched Season 2?
In the season one finale of Ratched, Mildred intended to uproot her family and go in search of the finest cancer treatment for Gwendolyn. After Mildred’s sibling found out about her decision to mercy-kill Edmund, the plot quickly went awry.
Edmund and Charlotte escaped from prison at the end of Season 1, with Edmund determined to exact revenge on Mildred. The second season may focus on Mildred’s reaction to her brother’s escape and delve deeper into Edmund and Charlotte’s partnership.
Moreover, considering that all routes would ultimately lead to Mildred becoming the terrible (and dangerous) lady in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Season 2 is primed to showcase the protagonist’s character’s path to evil.
Ratched Season 2 Trailer
Season 2 would premiere in early 2025 if it were to happen. But Ratched is in limbo, so there’s no trailer yet. Netflix has released a video exploring the long career of Nurse Ratched in film and television. This serves as a great introduction to the character and the story arc that makes her unique.
