Rap Sh!t Season 1 HBO Release Date Is Here: Everything You Need To Know

It’s been nearly eight months since we said our final goodbyes to HBO’s Insecure, and in that time, we’ve collectively cycled through the five stages of grief. But some deity (read: Issa Rae) must have heard our desperate bargaining because Issa has given us a new project to fill the “BLOCC” shaped hole in our hearts. Rap Sh!t, the latest HBO Max comedy from Issa, is almost here.

Rap Sh!t follows Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), two estranged high school friends from Miami who reunite and form a hip hop group in their hometown, similar to the IRL rap duo City Girls (and this isn’t a coincidental comparison—both Yung Miami and JT of City Girls are co-executive producers for the show).

What Is the Story of Rap Sh!t Season 1?

Shawna is an aspiring rapper who works at the front desk of a hotel in Miami during the day and writes and performs under a stage name and mask at night. One night, she goes live on Instagram with Mia, a single mother working multiple jobs, and their freestyle rap goes viral.

In addition to highlighting Shawna and Mia’s journey through the music industry, the show highlights the power of female friendship, dream-chasing, and the real obstacles faced by women breaking into the world of hip-hop, such as sexism. Expect the show to reflect criticisms leveled at major female rappers in the music industry, such as Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and, of course, City Girls. Issa told The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s inspiration: “I saw these comments from a prominent producer about female rappers and how all they rap about is their vaginas, to put it euphemistically, and I thought that was so unfair.” So I decided to begin telling this story right away.”

Will Issa Appear in ‘rap Sh!t’ as Well?

Unfortunately, bestie, I don’t think we’ll see any more shenanigans from Issa, Molly, Tiffany, and Kelly in Rap Sh!t. In fact, Issa told THR that she never considered playing in Rap Sh!t. While Issa will not be appearing on the show this time, she will serve as the show’s head writer and executive producer, with Syreeta Singleton taking the helm as showrunner.

But there is one thing that both Insecure and Rap Sh!t have in common: The episode titles for the first season are idiosyncratic in Issa’s signature style (think Insecure’s “Insecure as Fuck,” “Messy as Fuck,” “Racist as Fuck,” and so on). The episode titles on Rap Sh!t follow a similar pattern: “Something for the City,” “Something for the Girls,” and “Something for the Hood.” It’s known as an Issa egg.

Will ‘rap Sh!t’ Get A Season 2?

A second season has not yet been confirmed by HBO or Issa, but there is widespread speculation that one will be released. Rap Sh!t received more than $12.6 million in “small screen tax credits” from the state of California earlier this month, indicating that the show will most likely be relocated to the west coast (the inaugural season was filmed in Miami).

All of this is fairly confidential at the moment, but it indicates that renewal is extremely likely, if not certain, at this point. Not to mention that relocating to California for the second season would be consistent with the plot. After all, where does every viral social media phenomenon go? Girls, it’s time to head west.
