Pose Summary
The first season of Pose takes place in 1987 and 1988. It looks at “the juxtaposition of several parts of life and society in New York,” including the African-American and Latino ball culture world, the downtown social and literary scene, and the rise of the yuppie milieu.
In 1990, the second season starts. More of the characters now have HIV or AIDS or are infected with HIV. Some have become AIDS activists with ACT UP, and everyone now goes to fundraisers, funerals, and memorial services for their many friends and lovers in the community who have been hurt by the AIDS pandemic. Some ballroom dance styles start to become popular when songs by Madonna, Malcolm McLaren, and others come out. This gives people in the community new chances to dance and teach dance. Some are working as strippers and dominatrices.
In 1994, when the last season starts, Blanca is trying to balance her life as a nurse’s assistant, a mother, and a partner to Christopher, who works in the same hospital where she does. The season also focuses on how House of Evangelista gets back together after Pray Tell’s health scare and Lemar’s role as the father of the new, wild group House of Khan.
