Nick Saban Career
As an assistant coach, Nick Saban worked for the Naval Academy, West Virginia University, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, and Michigan State University in the early years of his career. This period, which spanned from 1977 until 1987, gave Saban invaluable experience. Long-term, he intended to return to Kent State as head coach, but Dick Crum was appointed in his place.
In 1989, Saban accepted an invitation to take on the role of head coach at the University of Toledo following a brief tenure as the Houston Oilers’ assistant coach in the National Football League. Under Nick’s direction, the squad underwent an immediate transformation, dropping just two games during the 1990 campaign.
Saban left Toledo after just one season to become the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. Nick later expressed regret for his decision and said that this was one of the worst times in his career, despite staying in this post for the following four years.
Saban took over as Michigan State University’s new head coach shortly before the 1995 campaign. He steadily turned around the Spartans after a difficult couple of seasons, and in 1999, he guided them to a successful season with just two losses. Nick Saban left Michigan State after this season of success and took a job at LSU. He coached the Tigers for five years and won a BCS National Championship with them.
As the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Nick Saban made a second comeback to the NFL in 2004. The club had a difficult first season, and the second season was much more unsatisfactory due to injuries. It soon became clear that Nick Saban was making a comeback to college football when rumors started to surface that he was being considered for the head coaching position at Alabama State University.
Saban took over as the Crimson Tide’s head coach in earnest in 2007. After that, he guided the group to a 12-0 victory record and a perfect second season. Nick won multiple Coach of the Year honors when the squad advanced to the SEC Championship game.
In 2010, the Crimson Tide not only won the national championship but also concluded the season unblemished. The Crimson Tide gained a reputation for utterly dominating teams during the ensuing years. They took home back-to-back national titles in 2012 and 2013.

The Crimson Tide won several more championship titles and finished in the top ranks throughout the following few years. The team resumed their peak performance in 2015 after getting off to a rather poor start. Saban’s first Sugar Bowl victory came in 2017. Alabama was knocked back to earth in the 2019 season, losing more than twice for the first time since 2010 and missing out on the College Football Playoffs.
However, the Crimson Tide bounced back in 2020, defeating No. 3 Ohio State 52–24 to win the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship and the University’s 18th National Championship. With the victory, Saban surpassed Paul Bryant for the record number of National Titles ever with his seventh overall and sixth with Alabama.
Nick stated on January 10, 2024, that he was leaving his position as Alabama’s coach after 16 seasons and almost $130 million in salary.
