Nick Saban Career
As an assistant coach, Nick Saban worked for the Naval Academy, West Virginia University, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, and Michigan State University in the early years of his career. This period, which spanned from 1977 until 1987, gave Saban invaluable experience. Long-term, he intended to return to Kent State as head coach, but Dick Crum was appointed in his place.
In 1989, Saban accepted an invitation to take on the role of head coach at the University of Toledo following a brief tenure as the Houston Oilers’ assistant coach in the National Football League. Under Nick’s direction, the squad underwent an immediate transformation, dropping just two games during the 1990 campaign.
