Gru: The Rise of Gru (also called Minions 2) is an upcoming American computer-animated comedy film produced and released by Illumination and Universal Pictures. Minions (2015) was a prelude to this sequel, which is the fifth installment in the Despicable Me film series overall. With Steve Carell and Pierre Coffin returning as Gru and the Minions, along with Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews, the film is directed by Kyle Balda with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val serving as co-directors.
Minions 2: The Rise of Gru Release Date Confirmed
The movie was originally scheduled to be released on July 3, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their incomplete status with Illumination Mac Guff’s temporary closure in response to that incident, the release date was pushed back to July 2, 2021, and then it was pushed back again to July 1, 2022.
On July 1, 2022, Universal Pictures is preparing to release in theatres across the United States the animated film titled Minions: The Rise of Gru. The film is scheduled to have its world premiere on June 13th, 2022 at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Minions 2: The Rise of Gru Official Trailer Release
On February 5, 2020, a full-length trailer for “Minions: The Rise of Gru” came out. A teaser for the next “Minions” spin-off movie was shown during the 2020 Super Bowl, and the trailer came out just a few days later. The official trailer shows us the next part of the “Minions” franchise story. It has both a lot of action and some funny moments. Over the course of almost three minutes, the trailer shows that Gru, when he was still a child, went to an interview to join The Vicious 6. Even though the interview doesn’t go well, Gru gets the team’s attention by stealing something valuable right in front of them. Gru then makes the fatal mistake of giving the object to one of his minions, Otto, as he and the rest of the core minion gang ride off to fight The Vicious 6. Then, when Otto proudly says that he traded the item for a pet rock, things get very awkward. Gru is not happy to hear this.
Even though the official “Minions: The Rise of Gru” trailer has been out for more than a year, Universal Pictures may make a new one as the July 1, 2022 release date gets closer. Keep an eye out for more “Minions: The Rise of Gru” footage. We haven’t seen it all yet.
Minions 2: The Rise of Gru Expected Plot
According to Universal Studios, the plot of Minions 2: The Rise of Gru is as follows: “During the 1970s, Gru grows up in the suburbs amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared trousers. Gru, a fan of the supervillain supergroup Vicious 6, hatches a plot to become sufficiently evil to join them. Fortunately, he receives assistance from his loyal servants, the Minions.
“Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto, a new Minion with braces and a desperate drive to please, utilize their skills as they and Gru construct their first lair, experiment with their first weapons, and execute their first missions.”
After the Vicious 6 expel Wild Knuckles as their leader, Gru interviews to become the newest member. However, nothing goes as planned, and chaos erupts! However, Gru quickly seeks counsel from an unlikely source.
Minions 2: The Rise of Gru Cast Information
Minions: The Rise of Gru, as previously announced, would be another prequel to the Despicable Me movie, depicting what happened after the minions meet Gru and begin to work together. Steve Carrell reprises his role as the younger Gru, which he played briefly at the end of the first film in 2015. In addition, longtime franchise director Pierre Coffin will return to voice the Minions. Julie Andrews reprises her role as Gru’s mother Marlena, while Russell Brand reprises his role as Gru’s assistant Dr. Nefario. It is unknown what Nefario’s involvement in the film will be, but we can assume it will illustrate how he and Gru first collaborated.
Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Danny Trejo as Stronghold, and Alan Arkin as Wild Knuckles are among the new cast members joining the film as The Vicious 6. Michelle Yeoh will also play Master Chow, a kung fu practitioner turned acupuncturist and don’t forget about Otto, the new minion with braces who traded the Vicious 6 Stone with a Pet Rock, Gru is not happy about that.

Will there be a Despicable Me 4?
The last two Despicable Me movies, Minions and Despicable Me 3, each made more than $1 billion at the box office around the world, according to The Numbers. With budgets of less than $80 million, it’s clear that Illumination isn’t going to stop making these movies any time soon. That doesn’t even include all the money the studio has made from selling t-shirts, Blu-Rays, and DVDs.
Gru and his three adopted daughters, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher/Nev Scharrel), will be back in a fourth Despicable Me movie. This comes as no surprise to anyone. Since 2017, when Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination, told Bloomberg what would happen to the movie series, these plans have been in place. He said in the article, “We have a great story to tell. So far, we are not running out of steam.”
Even though it was confirmed almost four years ago, there haven’t been any changes since then. We would expect the four main human characters from the first three movies, as well as a lot of Minions, to come back. Since each of the first three Despicable Me movies had a different villain, it would make sense for the fourth movie to keep the trend going by bringing in another strange bad guy to give Gru a lot of trouble.
Our best guess? Most likely, Despicable Me 4 will fly into theatres in 2023 or 2024. In the meantime, just wait until Minions: The Rise of Gru comes out to see everyone.
