Marvin Gaye was one of the greatest soul singers of all time, but he died tragically young in 1984, at the age of 44. In this article, we’ll talk about what happened to Marvin and what’s been going on with his family since he died.
Who Was Marvin Gaye?
Marvin Gaye was a singer, songwriter and producer from the United States.
He was an important part of the Motown sound of the 1960s first as a session singer and then as a solo artist. His Motown hits included “How Sweet It Is” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” He also sang duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross, and Tami Terrell.
In the 1970s, he released the albums What’s Going On and Let’s Get It On. Along with Stevie Wonder, he was one of the first Motown artists to leave the company on his own.
In the early 1980s, he went to Europe to avoid paying taxes. After that, he came back with the hit song “Sexual Healing,” which won a Grammy Award and the album of the same name.
Marvin Gaye’s Death: What Happened?
Marvin Gaye’s father, Marvin Gay Sr., shot him to death at their home in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles California, on April 1, 1984.
The singer was shot twice after he tried to stop a fight between his parents and got into an argument with his father. When he got to the California Hospital Medical Center, they said he was dead.
His death has been remembered in many songs over the years. He was given a place to be buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery. After he died, his body was burned, and his ashes were scattered around the Pacific Ocean.
Why Did Marvin Gaye’s Father Shoot Him?
In the days before Marvin Gaye died, his parents had a fight about a lost insurance policy letter.
Gaye’s bedroom was the scene of a fight the day before he died. Gaye told Marvin Sr. to stop shouting at his mother which made him angry.
On April 1, 1984, at about 12:30 p.m., Marvin Sr. shouted at his wife about the paper. Marvin shouted back downstairs in his bathrobe and told his father that if he had something to say, he should do it in person.
Alberta says that Gaye told Marvin Sr. not to come to his room when he said no. But his father ran upstairs to Alberta’s room to yell at her, which made Gaye jump out of bed.
Gaye is said to have shoved his father out of the room and started kicking and punching him when telling him to leave didn’t work. Alberta later told Ritz: “Marvin smacked him. I yelled at him to stop, but he didn’t hear me. He gave my husband some hard kicks.”
Minutes after they broke up, Marvin Sr. went into his bedroom and came back with a.38 pistol that his son had given him. He pointed the gun at Gaye, put it to his heart, and fired.
“I was about eight feet away from Marvin when my husband with his gun came to the door of the bedroom,” Alberta said. “My husband didn’t say a word; he just pointed the gun at Marvin. I screamed, but it didn’t last long. He my husband, fired a gun, which made Marvin scream. I tried to get away. After the first shot, Marvin fell to the ground.”
Marvin Gaye’s Relationship With His Father
Marvin Gaye was born in 1939 in the city of Washington, D.C. He had three siblings, and Zeola was his sister. Marvin Gaye and his dad, Marvin Gay Sr., have had a tense relationship ever since Marvin was a child.
As a Christian minister, Marvin Sr. was a strict boss who often scolded his children. He was also a cross-dresser, which made people in the neighborhood pick on young Marvin.
When Marvin Gaye became famous, he added a “e” to the end of his last name to fight back against claims that he was gay. Gaye’s dad never liked any of his son’s music, anymore.
Even though their relationship got better when Marvin Gaye’s song “What’s Going On” became a hit, he and Marvin never really got along.
Was Marvin’s Dad In Jail?
Marvin Gay S. was first charged with first-degree murder, but the charges were changed to voluntary manslaughter after a brain tumor was found.
An autopsy on his son showed that the singer had drugs in his body. Marvin Sr. was later given a six-year sentence that was put on hold and probation. In 1998, he died at an old-age home.
