Bungie Reveals Marathon
Bungie is reusing the Marathon intellectual property to develop a PvP extraction game. Bungie, the developer of Destiny and Halo, finally revealed their next game during today’s PlayStation Showcase. This announcement has been anticipated for years.

Although only a teaser and website have been released thus far, Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will be available on PS5, Xbox One, and PC with complete cross-play and cross-save functionality. Bungie gives an overview of Marathon as follows:

Marathon appears to be set in a future timeline, around the year 2850, where “clone technology” is commonplace and synthetic bodies and mind-altering abilities are commonplace. In the game, players are referred to as Runners, and the brief teaser clip depicts them fighting in an arena while wearing full body armor and using a variety of standard weaponry.

Game director Christopher Barrett talks with PlayStation about the new project Marathon.
“We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world,” explains Marathon game director Christopher Barrett. While this latest version of Marathon isn’t a direct sequel, it will have references for players of the original first-person shooter that debuted in 1994 on the Mac.
“The original Marathon games revealed story moments through terminals, all in text,” says Barrett. “But now we have so many more ways to immerse players in this world, both in and out of game. We’ll be carrying that through in the design of this game.” As this is a PvP game there is no single-player campaign mode and Bungie is creating persistent and evolving zones in Marathon.
Barrett has also confirmed in another Bungie blog that there would be dedicated servers for Marathon, as well as “vigorous anti-cheat measures.” Dedicated servers for the Marathon event are a pleasant break from the peer-to-peer connectivity that Destiny 2 players have had to endure.

Fans of first-person shooters have recently shown an increasing interest in extraction shooters like Hunt: Showdown, Second Extinction, and The Cycle: Frontier. Given Bungie’s reputation, it’s safe to compare Marathon to other popular multiplayer shooters like Escape from Tarkov and Call of Duty: Warzone’s DMZ mode.
A release date has not been announced yet; however, before its takeover by Sony, Bungie stated that it intended to produce at least one new intellectual property by 2025. While I can’t give a timeline on when that information will be coming, what I can say is this: The next time you hear from us about Marathon, we’ll be able to show you the gameplay and will be much closer to launch,” says Marathon general manager Scott Taylor.
