14:58:28, Disney hasn’t been able to turn a profit on it. Since the film’s debut a little over two weeks ago, many people have been asking how much money Avatar 2 needed to make in order to be deemed a success.
Last week, Avatar: The Way of Water was a hit at the box office, swiftly becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Avatar 2 is now interestingly behind Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, which raked in a staggering $1.488 billion worldwide. As of right present, $1.4 billion has been made by Cameron’s movies globally.
It’s reasonable to believe that Avatar: The Way of Water might just surpass the $2 billion threshold based on trends shown thus far.
Why Does Avatar 2 Need $2 Billion At The Box Office?
Deadline claims that the production budget for Avatar 2 is a staggering $460 million, and that’s without accounting for marketing expenses. James Cameron hasn’t yet been kind enough to provide a precise figure, though.
In an interview in November 2022, James Cameron said that Avatar 2 needed to make $2 billion at the box office to be profitable.
“You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Avatar: The Way of Water must earn more money at the box office than it did during production in order to break even. Disney may only give the go-ahead for Cameron’s three additional sequels to the franchise if The Way of Water proves to be a financial success.
Avatar 2 will surpass Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is now the most costly film ever filmed with a production cost of $379 million, assuming the real cost of making the film is close to the figures provided by Deadline. This gives The Way of Water even more justification to earn $2 billion at the movie office.
Avatar 2 may or may not be the most costly movie ever created because the precise costs have not yet been disclosed. Lachlan Murdoch, the heir to Fox Media, made a statement that supported the information above. Murdoch stated that the follow-up to the $1 billion dollar budgeted first Avatar film that would be one of “the most expensive movies of all time.”
