This holiday season, Netflix will release the next Knives Out film. Rian Johnson announced the title of the new Benoit Blanc mystery, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on Twitter on Monday.
Johnson expressed his desire to emulate Agatha Christie and have each of Benoit Blanc’s mysteries take on a new tone in a thread (and also a new title). The detective will return, played by Daniel Craig with an ambiguous and indecipherable Southern accent, but the overall vibe will be different — it’s an homage to Christie’s masterful exploration of the genre, according to Johnson.
“I think there’s a misconception that her books all follow the same formula,” he says, “but fans know the opposite is true.” He goes on to discuss some of the genres Christie explored in her murder mysteries, as well as what he hopes to accomplish with future Benoit Blanc mysteries.
Where to watch Glass Onion with time
In February 2020, Lionsgate announced plans for a sequel to “Knives Out,” with CEO Jon Feltheimer stating, “a production start for a follow-up…is imminent.” After a pandemic and a massive Netflix buyout, filming on the film began in Greece in June 2021. Near the beginning of this year, the streaming service confirmed the film would be released as part of its 2022 slate, simply listing it as “Knives Out 2.” However, thanks to the video below, the project now has an official name.

Glass Onion Plot
Along with the announcement video, Netflix said that “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will follow Benoit Blanc as he “travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of suspects.” (Get it? Onions have layers.) I’m sorry, but I’ve also seen “Shrek.” Before we all get too excited, though, it’s probably best not to think too much about what the movie’s title could mean for Mr. Blanc’s next case.
You see, the name “Glass Onion” comes from a song by the Beatles from 1968 with the same name. That song was part of the famous “White Album.” John Lennon wrote the song to confuse fans of The Beatles, many of whom he thought were putting too much thought into the lyrics, which often didn’t make sense. Keeping this in mind, the story in “Knives Out” does at one point involve knives, so who knows? Maybe Rian Johnson is out here playing chess in four dimensions, and onions will end up being a big part of the movie’s plot.
