Maryland Department of Corrections confirmed that a child r@pist who had his offenses detailed in a recent comprehensive state investigation on s*x abuse and coverups inside the Archdiocese of Baltimore d!ed in jail last week.

John Merzbacher, 81, had been convicted of rape in 1995 for his s*xual assault of students while teaching at a Catholic middle school in Baltimore during the 1970s. He was serving four life sentences at the time of his de@th. Officials from the Maryland Department of Corrections stated he passed away of natural causes on Friday in the prison hospital.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office spent years researching child s*xual abuse in the archdiocese and just released their findings, which has brought additional attention to Merzbacher’s misdeeds in recent weeks. The investigation revealed that over 600 children had been s*xually molested by more than 150 priests and others connected to the Baltimore archdiocese, many of whom got away with it for years.

Merzbacher is held out in the report as “the most obvious example of systemic abuse” performed by non-clerical members of the archdiocese such as deacons and instructors at Catholic schools. Previous inquiries have largely concentrated on abusive clergy.

According to the study, Merzbacher tormented children at Catholic Community Middle School in south Baltimore while the administration turned a blind eye. He allegedly threatened to kill the children or their families if they notified anybody about his predatory behavior, and he raped and abused scores of male and female students, often at gunpoint.

The study raises serious questions regarding who within the archdiocese knew about Merzbacher’s abuse and refused to hold him accountable, as investigators interviewed him in prison as part of their examination and he denied doing anything wrong. He dropped out of college in 1979.

Prosecutors received proof that Merzbacher had molested 13 other students when he was convicted of raping one in 1995, but they chose not to press charges since he was already serving life in prison, according to the report.

Now, as always, is an important time to keep those victim-survivors who Merzbacher harmed so deeply in our prayers, the Archdiocese of Baltimore said in a statement Monday. The Archdiocese prays for their strength and for their continued healing.

Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland approved legislation ending the state’s statute of limitations for child s*x abuse claims in April, just days after the attorney general’s report came out. The new law goes into effect on October 1. Several victims have come out with threats of civil litigation due to the new law.
