This year marks the 20th anniversary of the film adaptation of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone, which launched the series that would become wildly popular with people who weren’t already familiar with J.K Rowling‘s HP book series. The first Harry Potter film came to the big screen in 2001, with a sequel following two years later.
The final movie was released in 2011, which also coincided with the release of Deathly Hollows: Part II and marked the end of a franchise that dominated at theaters for over 10 years
There may be more Harry Potter books to come, but the final work in the series has been released. If you wanted to see what all of the fuss was about, we offer a review on every movie so far. Even with a less favorable reception than its predecessor, Fantastic Beasts 3 is generating much interest among fans.
In 2016, there was also a West End show that followed Harry and his friends 19 years after the events of ‘Deathly Hallows,’ with all children having grown up. Even outside theaters, the Wizarding World is alive and well in the real world. Universal Studios concluded its own Wizarding World in 2010, while Warner Bros. Studio Tour London has drawn Muggles since 2012.
And of course, now that the stage production, Cursed Child has been produced and has taken to the theater. The performance is rumored to be making it’s way to screens across the world which would not be a surprise considering most successful Broadway productions tend to make their way into movies. However, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence towards such a cinematic So, would you like another Harry Potter movie?
Let’s take a look at what we know is scheduled for the future of The Wizarding World.
Fantastic Beasts 3
The fallout in late 2018 over the casting of Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3 has been well documented. In July 2016, Depp was fired from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after he refused Disney’s direct order to not work on any other film while starring in theirs.
David Yates, who recently replaced had a hard time replacing Johnny Depp as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the newest Harry Potter movie. Critics accused J.K. Rowling of being transphobic after she announced Mikkelsen would replace Depp, leading some other cast members to stand up for her and others not so much.
Although the film was being pushed back to ensure that all of its visual effects were completed and up to standard, it seems it will be ready by July 15th, 2022.
NB: The message is unclear as there are two options for what date the release could occur on- July 15th or a yet unknown future date. If the A new Harry Potter film is coming out, but that’s not the question.
Harry Potter HBO Series
As rumored, there may be yet another installment of Harry Potter movies in the form of an HBO TV series.
But this has very little to do with the success of Harry Potter in films, right? Maybe not. The Mandalorian’s huge success has led to several other live-action Star Wars shows and movie projects such as Rogue Squadron.
There have been rumors over whether or not a Harry Potter TV series will ever be made, but it is not yet known in which time period it would take place. The show must either skip over the characters from high school to adulthood (in which they are less key members of the story) or outright make them adults, as the actors who play them Despite this, it seems that The Mandalorian will primarily follow its own original story and might only occasionally revisit memorable characters.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is canon according to J.K.Rowling, who has said so definitively in interviews and on Twitter since publishing. Should Warner Bros. decide to make the ninth movie in the Harry Potter series, it would be a logical choice for what storyline should go next.
With that said, many exciting events may have transpired during this time. If making a film set during this time is to be the case, the tricky part would be recast with the main actors in their 30s (we can forgive re-casting Dumbledore from Michael Gambon to Jude Law since The Crimes of Grindelwald is set decades before).
Warner Bros. has said that, in order to preserve the cast’s on-screen chemistry, they will wait until those actors reach a certain age before being involved with another potter movie.
Hogwarts Legacy
There are many plotlines that could be explored in a Harry Potter video game. A potential storyline is what happened to Hogwarts after the War against Voldermort was won and Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, graduated from their final year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – school life picks back up without them and new events take Nothing is certain.
There are no rumors of a Harry Potter movie adaptation based on Portkey’s upcoming open-world video game set in the Wizarding World during the late 1800s – and its unlikely that we’ll see anything like that anytime soon. However, due to the result of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them being well-received by audiences, it is unclear whether or not there will be a new Harry Potter movie.
