A guitar that was damaged when Liam and Noel Gallagher got into a fight backstage, which led to the breakup of Oasis, sold at auction for £325,000.
The red Gibson ES-355 guitar was broken backstage at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in August 2009. The band famously canceled their set at the last minute after Noel left the band immediately.
Last month, it was said that the guitar would be auctioned off, with a starting price of €150,000 (£125,000). Auctioneers thought the item could sell for as much as €500,000 (£415,000), but it only made €385,500 (£325,000) in the end.
The auction was held by the Artpèges gallery. The gallery’s founder, Jonathan Berg, said that the guitar was “a cult moment” in modern music history and that things between the two brothers had been getting worse for a while. It blew up backstage and broke one of Noel’s guitars, which caused the group to split up.
Arthur Perault, one of the gallery’s co-founders, told The Guardian that Noel got rid of the guitar in the end because “it reminded him too much of Oasis.”
After the fight at the French music festival, Oasis broke up. Noel recently talked about how he sat in the back of a car at the festival before deciding to leave the band.
“The driver drove away, and that was the end of it. I didn’t feel relieved because I knew there was going to be a shitstorm. And a lot of nonsense was going to be said about it,” he said.
“Finally, one of the biggest bands ever broke up. I couldn’t go back to England because the press was at my house, where my wife and kids were.
He also said, “So we had to get her to leave in the middle of the night, and they came to meet me somewhere in France.” When we finally got back to England, of course, everything went to hell.”
Even though his fight with Liam was the final reason they broke up, he said it wasn’t “a decision [he] took lightly.”
Liam Gallagher recently said that he hasn’t seen his brother and fellow Oasis member Noel in about 10 years. The famous Britpop band broke up in 2009, and even though there have been many rumors that they will get back together soon, the Gallagher brothers still don’t talk to each other.
In a new interview with Esquire, Liam said, “The last time I saw Noel was about 10 years ago at a football game.” That’s too bad, isn’t it?
“The good times are more important than the bad,” he said. “I think we should leave it at that for now.”
