John Clayton Mayer is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who was born on October 16, 1977. Mayer was born in Fairfield County, Connecticut and grew up there. He went to Berklee College of Music in Boston but dropped out and moved to Atlanta with Clay Cook in 1997. Together, they made Lo-Fi Masters, a short-lived two-man band. After they broke up, Mayer kept playing in local clubs to improve his skills and build a fan base.
After he played at the South by Southwest festival in 2001, he was signed to Aware Records and then, later, to Columbia Records. His first extended play, Inside Wants Out, was released by Columbia Records. His next two studio albums, Room for Square and Heavier Thing, did well at the box office and were certified multi-platinum.
