In 2020, Netflix released the four-part documentary Filthy Rich, which looked at the crimes of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Now, Netflix is bringing the documentary back, but this time it will focus on Ghislaine Maxwell, who worked with Epstein and was once his partner. Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich goes “beyond the headlines” to look at how her “class and privilege hid her predatory nature” when she helped traffick young women with Epstein.
The criminal, who is the daughter of media mogul Robert Maxwell, went to trial earlier this year for her role in Epstein’s sexual abuse. She has been the subject of several documentaries this year, but where is she now?
Who Is Ghislaine Maxwell?
Ghislaine Maxwell is the youngest of Robert Maxwell‘s three daughters. She was born on Christmas Day, 1961, in France. She spent most of her childhood at Maxwell’s mansion on Headington Hill before going to Oxford University. During the 1980s, she was an active part of London’s social scene.
However, she moved to New York after her father died in a mysterious way: he drowned while on his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, in the Canary Islands. Ghislaine was quickly accepted into New York’s elite social circle, and it was there that she met wealthy businessman Jeffery Epstein. Reports say that they were together in the early 1990s, and in a 2003 profile in Vanity Fair, Epstein called Ghislaine his “best friend.”
Several of the people who said Epstein groomed, sexually abused, and trafficked them also said that Ghislaine Maxwell helped Epstein find underage girls for sexual abuse and exploitation. In 2020, the FBI arrested her in New Hampshire.
Where Is Ghislaine Maxwell Now?
Ghislaine Maxwell is in jail right now. On June 28, 2022, she was given a 20-year prison sentence and a $720,000 (£610,000) fine for sex trafficking from 1994 to 2004. According to BBC News, Judge Alison J. Nathan called Maxwell’s actions “heinous and predatory” and said, “Ms. Maxwell worked with Epstein to choose young victims who were vulnerable and played a key role in allowing sexual abuse.”
On December 29, 2021, a jury in a US federal court found Maxwell guilty on five counts related to sex trafficking. One of the counts was sex trafficking of a minor, and the other was transporting a minor with the intent to do illegal sexual activity.
She was also found guilty of plotting to transport minors with the intention of getting them to do illegal sexual acts, plotting to sell sex to minors, and plotting to get minors to travel so they could do illegal sexual acts. She was found not guilty of trying to get a child to travel to do illegal sex acts.
