Court records show that content creator and influencer Nikita Dragun was arrested this week and put in a men’s jail in Miami.
Dragun is a transgender woman who posts videos on YouTube and Instagram. Her videos have been seen by more than 250 million people (where she has 9 million followers). She talks openly about her gender identity, and in her videos, she talks about her lifestyle and beauty tips. She also started a company called Dragun Beauty that sells makeup.
Dragun was put in a unit for men at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami this week because of something that happened. Court records show that she is being charged with misdemeanor of disorderly conduct and felony battery of a police officer. After at least a day in jail, she was let out on her own recognizance, which means she didn’t have to pay bail.
Local 10 News says that Dragun was arrested because he was causing trouble and walking around The Goodtime Hotel pool naked. The hotel security staff told Dragun to stop, and she threw water at them, so they told her to stop.
Police were called, and when they got to her room, security staff told her again not to bother other hotel guests or she would have to leave. Then, Dragun is said to have thrown an open bottle at a security guard and a police officer, hitting them and getting water all over them.
Dragun’s lawyers were unhappy with how Miami police handled her arrest. They didn’t say anything about the exact charges she is facing.
Jack Ketsoyan, a representative for Dragun at Full Scope Public Relations, said, “The fact that Nikita, who is legally a woman, is in a Florida jail with men is very upsetting and dangerous.” Nikita was put in jail with men even though she is legally a woman.
“This decision by the Miami-Dade County corrections department goes against their own rules, which say that transgender inmates should be grouped and housed according to their safety needs and gender identity. Nikita has been let go and is no longer in danger.”
Dragun’s arrest and incarceration in a men’s unit are notable given her size, but many transgender people who are locked up in the US do the same thing. In practice, many corrections departments put people in facilities based on their assigned s*x at birth or their genitalia at the time they were arrested.
Even though research shows that transgender people in jail are more likely to be beaten or hurt. This has been an issue in Miami in the past. Three transgender people sued Miami-Dade County for the abuse they say they got in 2020 when they were also given the wrong gender.
Dragun reportedly asked a judge during her hearing whether she had to remain in the men’s unit. “I don’t make the rules up there,” the judge said, according to Local 10.
Dragun is due back in court on December 7.
