Terrell Eldorado Owens was born on December 7, 1973, in Alexander City, Alabama, to L.C. Russell and Marilyn Heard. His mother and grandmother raised him and his three older siblings. He enjoyed watching football, but his grandmother would not allow him to play until he was in high school.

Owens attended Benjamin Russell High School and participated in basketball, track, baseball, and, in his junior year, football. He attended the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, where he played basketball, and football, and ran track. He became a starter in his sophomore year. In order to be drafted by the NFL, he competed in the Senior Bowl during his senior year of high school.

Personal life

Owens has two daughters and two sons from four different mothers. Melanie Paige Smith III, the mother of Owens’ daughter, sued him in September 2011 for failure to pay child support, but the case was settled prior to trial.  Owens insisted that the reason for the missed child support payments was a decrease in his NFL wages, and Smith was aware of his situation.

On a May 8, 2012, episode of Dr. Phil, three of Owens’ four children’s mothers accused him of either underpaying or failing to pay child support at all. Owens claimed he was once paid $45,000 per month in child support.
