Sam Docherty, a prominent player for Carlton, has endured a third ACL injury and a meniscus tear, marking a deeply unfortunate event.
At 30 years old, Docherty sustained the injury during a tackle in the first quarter of Carlton’s narrow victory over Brisbane on Friday night. He attempted to continue playing despite the injury but was ultimately substituted out at halftime.
On Saturday, the Blues disclosed the dire news, confirming that Docherty would miss the rest of the 2024 season. Brad Lloyd, Carlton’s football manager, stated, “There is arguably no player in our competition who is more beloved than Sam Docherty.”
“The significance of football pales in comparison to everything Sam has faced and conquered in recent years; this turn of events just doesn’t seem just.
“However, as part of the Carlton community, our affection for Sam is deep — we’re committed to standing by him throughout his recovery so he can come back to the game on his own terms.

Sam Docherty deserves the world. I cannot explain the heartbreak & devastation I feel for him, how much bad luck can one man endure throughout this career. Small in the bigger picture of his life & it is only a footy injury, we know – but a third ACL. He does not deserve this.

“It’s not only the entire Carlton community that will support Sam; it’s safe to say that the entire football community will rally behind him too.
“While we will undoubtedly miss his contributions on the field, his influence on his teammates and the selfless culture we’re cultivating will remain deeply significant across the entire club.
In the past, Docherty overcame two episodes of testicular cancer and sustained two ACL injuries to his opposing left knee. It happened on a chaotic night at the Gabba where Keidean Coleman also suffered an ACL tear.
