Ionescu was born to Romanian-American parents in Walnut Creek, California. For Dan, though, things did not go as planned. His son and wife couldn’t move to the US until 1995. The family did not get together for more than six years.

There weren’t enough female baseball players in Ionescu’s middle school to form a team. Her school refused to let her play with the boys, but she considered it.

She should have been playing with dolls, the school told her. In response, she remembers rallying enough girls to create a team for her school. The USA Today Girls Basketball Player of the Year title went to her. Additionally, Max Preps awarded Sabrina Player of the Year.
