Rita Moreno, whose real name is Rosa Dolores Alvero Marcano, was born on December 11, 1931, in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Her mother was a seamstress, and her father, Francisco José Alvero, was a farmer. Moreno’s younger brother is Francisco. When Moreno was a little girl, her mother moved the family to New York City. As soon as she got there, she started taking dance lessons from a Spanish dancer.

Moreno started working as a Spanish-language dubbing actress for American movies when she was only 11 years old. Moreno started working in movies toward the end of Hollywood’s Golden Age. In 1950, she made her film debut in three movies, including the MGM musicals “The Toast of New Orleans” and “Pagan Love Song.” Moreno was in “Singin’ in the Rain,” a musical comedy made by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen in 1952.
