Richard Jay Belzer was an American actor, stand-up comic, and author. He was born on August 4, 1944, and died on February 19, 2023. He was best known for playing BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch, whom he played as a regular cast member on the NBC police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as in guest roles on several other series. He played the position for 23 years, from 1993 until 2016, when he decided to stop.

The show was a big hit and ran for seven seasons until 1999. After the show was over, Belzer played John Munch again on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” where he did so for 325 episodes until 2016.
Belzer has played John Munch on many other shows besides “Homicide” and “SVU.” Between 1996 and 2000, he played a part in four episodes of the first “Law & Order” and one episode of “The X-Files” in 1997. Belzer played Munch in the TV movie “Homicide: The Movie” and the short-lived UPN show “The Beat” in the year 2000. He has also played Munch in “Law & Order: Trial by Jury,” “Arrested Development,” “The Wire,” and even “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, which is a late-night talk show.
