Richard Jay Belzer was an American actor, stand-up comic, and author. He was born on August 4, 1944, and died on February 19, 2023. He was best known for playing BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch, whom he played as a regular cast member on the NBC police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as in guest roles on several other series. He played the position for 23 years, from 1993 until 2016, when he decided to stop.
Richard Belzer: Career Beginnings
In the early 1970s, Belzer started out as a stand-up comedian in New York City. He did show at Pips, the Improv, and Catch a Rising Star there. Belzer was also the warm-up comic for the audience on “Saturday Night Live,” He made several guest appearances on the show between 1975 and 1980.
Television Career
In 1984, Belzer had a show called “The Richard Belzer Show,” but it didn’t last long. After that, he was in episodes of the TV shows “Moonlighting,” “Miami Vice,” and “Tattingers.” In the 1990s, Belzer started to show up on TV more often. At the beginning of the decade, he played a news reporter on the CBS show “The Flash.” In more than one episode of “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” he played Inspector William Henderson.
But in 1993, when he started playing the main role of Detective John Munch on the police drama show “Homicide: Life on the Street,” Belzer got his big break. The show was a big hit and ran for seven seasons until 1999. After the show was over, Belzer played John Munch again on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” where he did so for 325 episodes until 2016.
Belzer has played John Munch on many other shows besides “Homicide” and “SVU.” Between 1996 and 2000, he played a part in four episodes of the first “Law & Order” and one episode of “The X-Files” in 1997. Belzer played Munch in the TV movie “Homicide: The Movie” and the short-lived UPN show “The Beat” in the year 2000. He has also played Munch in “Law & Order: Trial by Jury,” “Arrested Development,” “The Wire,” and even “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, which is a late-night talk show.

Radio Career
Belzer has also been on the radio a lot, in addition to TV and movies. He played on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” with Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Harold Ramis, and John Belushi from 1973 to 1975. In New York City, he cohosted “Brink & Belzer” in the late 1970s. Belzer has also been a regular guest on “The Howard Stern Show” and Alex Jones’ right-wing conspiracy show.
