Precision Neuroscience’s neural implant system was put into a patient’s brain in West Virginia. This was the first time the company’s electrode array was used on an aware person. Precision claims that the high-resolution image of the patient’s brain activity created by the process is the highest-resolution image of human thought.

“It was incredibly surreal,” In an interview with CNBC, Precision’s president and chief product officer, Craig Mermel, said. “The nature of the data and our ability to visualize that, you know, I got… chills.”

Precision Neuroscience was started in 2021 to help paralyzed people use digital devices by analyzing their brain patterns. Its main rival is Neuralink, which Elon Musk backs. The company’s Layer 7 Cortical Interface is a thin collection of electrodes that can be shaped to fit the brain’s surface without hurting the flesh.

Three patients with neurosurgery to remove tumors had Precision’s device briefly put on their brains. In the study, Precision’s system was placed in the brains of the patients for 15 minutes. Two patients were awake, so brain activity could be recorded as they spoke. WIRED also posted Precision Neuroscience’s achievement on their Twitter account.

What Does Precision Neuroscience Aim For?

Precision wants to make the process less painful by putting the array in through a small hole in the head. Brain-computer interface companies Paradromics and Neuralink have created systems that can be introduced into brain tissue. Precision doesn’t want to use this method because it could damage brain tissue.

As part of its test study, Precision aims to do the surgery on two more people in the next few weeks. Precision hopes its first-generation device will be fully approved by the FDA by the end of next year.
