Paul Hoolahan Death: Paul Hoolahan, Vanderbilt’s longtime athletic director, passed away on Wednesday, the school said. He was 72.
In 1990, after Roy Kramer left to become SEC commissioner, he took over the Commodores’ athletic department. Hoolahan will be remembered at Vanderbilt for the ways in which he significantly upgraded the department’s commercial operations, fundraising initiatives, and physical infrastructure.
As the Sugar Bowl’s executive director since 1996, Hoolahan moved his family from Nashville to New Orleans. He was instrumental in elevating the Sugar Bowl to the level of other elite college football bowl games.
He spearheaded the effort to have five different bowls host the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game before adding them to the New Year’s Six bowls and the rotation for the College Football Playoff semifinals.

How Did He Start His Career?
Hoolahan, a native New Yorker, started his athletic career as an All-ACC lineman for the North Carolina Tar Heels football. In the mid-1970s, he returned to UNC as an academic adviser and conditioning coach, and in the mid-1980s, he was promoted to the position of assistant athletic director.
He was actively involved with the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, and in 2015 he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
He was honored with the National Football Foundation’s Legacy Award in 2018, given to those who have made significant contributions to the NFF and/or who best exemplify the NFF’s objective.
Football Bowl Association, where he formerly held the position of president, honored him with their Legacy Award for “distinguished service within the Bowl industry” in 2019.
