The person who is thought to have killed a local radio DJ and then left the country in October 2021 has finally been caught.
Manuel Omar Burciaga-Perea, age 35 was charged with killing Gabriela Sifuentes Castilla age 38, a year ago. Castilla was better known as “Gaby Ramos” when she worked at the radio station “La Mas Picosita” in the Salt Lake area.
On Oct. 17, 2021, Burciaga-Perea is said to have shot Castilla several times from close range inside a Taylorsville home. The police say that he then ran away to Mexico.
Taylorsville Police said on Friday that he was caught in Chihuahua, Mexico, on Thursday with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service and federal and state agents in Mexico.
Burciaga-Perea and Castilla were in a relationship, but authorities said they found that the two had broken up multiple times because Burciaga-Perea had jealousy problems.
Taylorsville Police thanked the many agencies, from local and federal in the U.S. to those in Mexico, that helped them finally catch the alleged fugitive.
“Because Burciaga-Perea is a Mexican citizen and was in Mexico TVPD did not have the right to detain him, even though they knew where he was. This led to further legal proceedings to have him arrested,” the department wrote in its announcement on Friday. “The process was long and hard, but we’re glad that this important step toward resolution and fairness has been taken.”
Burciaga-Perea is being held by federal police in Mexico until he can be sent to the U.S.
