Marie Jane Korbelova was born on May 15, 1937, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Korbel, a Czech diplomat, and her mother, Anna Korbel. She was the daughter of Josef Korbel and Anna Korbel. She died on March 23, 2022, at the age of eighty-three. Katherine and John, two of her siblings, are among her closest friends. Her parents converted from Judaism to Catholicism in 1941, and they reared their children as practicing Roman Catholics. As a result of her father’s employment, the family went to Britain, where they lived London during World War II, enduring some of the worst of the Blitz and other disasters. The family left the United Kingdom for the first time in 1948, and they settled in the United States. When his son was young, his father was successful in landing a position as a political science professor at the University of Denver, ultimately advancing to the position of dean of international relations at the institution.

Albright began involved in fundraising for U.S. Senator Ed Muskie of Maine’s presidential campaign in 1972 while commuting between Washington, D.C. and New York City on a frequent basis. In 1976, she was promoted to the position of top legislative aide. Following the selection of a retired professor as National Security Advisor for the Carter Administration, she was appointed as a Legislative Liaison for the National Security Council, based in the White House’s West Wing. As a result of Carter’s defeat in the 1980 presidential election, Albright accepted a post at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars at the Smithsonian Institution, where she later worked on a study about Poland’s solidarity movement. She joined the Georgetown University faculty in 1982, where she taught Eastern European studies and served as the program director for the school’s women in global politics program. Throughout this time, she maintained her political connections, and in 1992, she was employed by the National Security Council to assist with the transition to the new administration brought about by President Bill Clinton’s election victory. In 1993, she was nominated to be the United States’ representative to the United Nations.

A contentious relationship with then-United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali highlighted Albright’s tenure as Ambassador, as did the mishandling of the Rwandan Genocide, which Albright has since come to view as one of her darkest misgivings. Albright played a pivotal role in the assassination of Boutros-Ghali and the subsequent installation of Kofi Annan as United Nations Secretary-General in 1996. She was appointed as the 64th Secretary of State of the United States of America in 1997, making her the first female Secretary of State and the highest-ranking woman in the history of the United States government at the time. She played a pivotal influence in the formulation of US foreign policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the Middle East during her time in office.
