Zeldin was a member of the US Army from 2003 until 2007 when he left active duty to become a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. He started working as an attorney for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the same year.
In 2010, Zeldin was elected to New York’s 3rd State Senate district where he ran against Democratic incumbent Brian X. Foley. Zeldin received 57% of the vote, defeating Foley. With 56% of the vote, he defeated Democrat Francis Genco to win reelection in 2012.
After defeating rivals Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, and Harry Wilson in June 2022, Zeldin officially stated in April 2021 that he would run for governor of New York in 2022. In November’s general election, Zeldin ran against Governor Kathy Hochul, whom he ultimately lost to.
