As the next host of “Saturday Night Live,” Jenna Ortega’s first task is to get out of the “teenage purgatory” of having to do the “Wednesday” dance again.
In a new “SNL” promo that came out on Wednesday, Ortega looks at a script while talking to the comedy trio Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy.
“Honestly, this is really well written, but I don’t want to do the “Wednesday” dance for promotion because we’ve seen so much of that already, and I think it’s time to try something new,” Ortega says.
The Pdd Boys agree with Ortega, but when the camera pulls back, it shows that they are dressed “down to the frill” in black dresses and braided wigs that look like they came from Wednesday Addams. After acting like they don’t know the “Wednesday” dance and don’t want to film it for the promo, Ortega finally gives in to their poorly masked desire to do the dance.
In true Wednesday Addams style, Ortega performs a bit of the dance between Higgins and Marshall on the famous “SNL” stage while Herlihy takes a picture of the moment with a smartphone.
The “Wednesday” dance took on a life of its own when the scene from the Netflix show appeared late last year and went viral on social media.
The “SNL” ad follows an interview in which Ortega talked about how she often changed the lines of her character on “Wednesday,” which got mixed reactions from people in the TV business.
“SNL” airs live on Nbc and Peacock every Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PST. This week’s host is Ortega, and the musical guest is The 1975.
