Jeffrey Lurie’s Early Life
On September 8, 1951, Jeffrey Lurie was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Morris and Nancy, who were Jewish parents. Philip Smith, the man who started the chain of General Cinema theaters, was his maternal grandfather.
During its commercial peak, the company ran the fourth-largest network of movie theaters in the US. After developing into the multibillion-dollar conglomerate Harcourt General, it also held consulting firms, publishing houses, and insurance companies.
Lurie has a sister, Cathy, and a brother, Peter. He attended Worcester, Massachusetts’s Clark University for his further study. Following graduation, Lurie attended Boston University for a master’s degree in psychology and Brandeis University for a doctorate in social policy. Jeffrey Lurie Chestnut Hill Productions
Lurie started Chestnut Hill Productions, his production firm, in 1985. The firm and TriStar Pictures established a multi-feature joint venture at first. In 1987, Warner Bros., MGM, and Paramount were among the studios that purchased Chestnut Hill projects. Lurie went on to create “Sweet Hearts Dance,” a 1988 dramedy starring Elizabeth Perkins, Jeff Daniels, Susan Sarandon, and Don Johnson.
Two years later, he produced “I Love You to Death,” a black comedy by Lawrence Kasdan with an ensemble cast that included River Phoenix, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, Tracey Ullman, and Joan Plowright.
Subsequently, Lurie produced the criminal comedy action film “V.I. Warshawski,” which starred Kathleen Turner as a private investigator from Chicago.
The 1996 teen drama “Foxfire,” which was based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel and starred Hedy Burress, Angelia Jolie, Jenny Shimizu, Jenny Lewis, and Sarah Rosenberg, was his last picture at Chestnut Hill as a producer.

Lurie was a native of Boston and had always been an avid supporter of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, two of the city’s premier sports teams. Because of this, when he stepped into sports team ownership in 1993, he attempted to purchase the Patriots. But Lurie withdrew from the auction when his uncle objected to the $150 million asking price. He continued by expressing interest in investing in a Baltimore expansion franchise and purchasing the Los Angeles Rams.
In the end, Lurie and his mother paid $195 million to owner Norman Braman for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1994; they had borrowed $190 million of that amount from the Bank of Boston. Lurie utilized millions of his shares in Harcourt General as equity capital to pay back the debt, and he also put his shares in the family trust as collateral.
As the Eagles’ owner, Lurie experienced his biggest triumph in 2018 when the team won Super Bowl LII. Ironically, they won 41–33 over the Patriots from Lurie’s hometown. The Eagles, owned by Lurie, have only made one other Super Bowl appearance, losing to the Patriots 21–24 in 2005.
