James Blake is an American author, media analyst, and former professional tennis player. While participating on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Tour, James Blake won ten titles and held the #4 spot in the world at one point in his singles ranking.
Blake reached the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics and the final of the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup. In 2005 and 2006, he reached the US Open quarterfinals; in 2008, he reached the Australian Open quarterfinals.
His father, Thomas, is African-American, while his mother, Betty, is British. He has an older brother, Thomas, who has also competed professionally in tennis. In addition, James has three half-brothers and a half-sister.

The Blake Foundation “invests critical seed money at the cutting edge of science: expediting the most promising work, and shortening the time it takes to transfer lab discoveries into better medicines for patients,” according to the foundation’s official website.
His first charitable endeavor was organizing “Anthem Live!”, a tennis exhibition and music event, in 2005 to raise money for cancer research. A few years later, he created the Thomas Blake, Sr. Memorial Research Fund in memory of his father, which supports cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

Blake, then 21 years old, participated in the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open in 2001 in addition to making his Davis Cup debut. He reached the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters Series tournament in Rome and the final in Newport the following year, in addition to winning the USTA Waikoloa Challenger, an ATP Tour title, and an ATP Masters Series title. James became the first male African-American champion to win an ATP tournament in Cincinnati. In the 2002 US Open, he also advanced to the third round.
Blake advanced to the Long Island final and the San Jose semifinals in 2003, but Roger Federer defeated him in the third round of the US Open. While preparing for a Masters event in May 2004, James slipped and injured his neck, breaking his seventh vertebra. In July 2004, he suffered from shingles, which resulted in temporary facial paralysis and limited vision, following the death of his father from stomach cancer.
Blake advanced to the ATP International Series final in 2005, losing to Andy Roddick in the process, and he went on to win another ATP Tour championship at the Stockholm Open. In 2006, he claimed his fourth ATP championship at the Sydney International.
A few months later, he added another trophy to his collection in the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas. Federer defeated him in the ATP Masters Series singles final, but he also won the singles titles in the Thailand Open and the ATP International Series. After winning the ATP Tour championship at the 2006 Stockholm Open, James finished the year ranked #4 in the world and #1 in the United States.
