Jackie Goldschneider talks about how she got better after having an eating disorder for 18 years.
The star of the Bravo reality shows Real Housewives of New Jersey, who has talked about her experience on the show, told E! News about her journey to healing and how she hopes to help other people by telling her story. Jackie has made much progress, but she wants her fans to know that she “would not call herself recovered yet.”
She told E! News, “I’ve been actively getting better for about a year.” “My relationship with food is so much better, but it’s still not where I need it to be.”
The Bravolebrity said that she eats almost everything now, with a few exceptions like fried food and cream sauce, but she still has “rules that make me feel safe and secure when I’m eating.”
“My therapist and nutritionist always tell me, ‘It’s great that you’re eating all these things and that they’re real foods, but we want to get you to a place where you’re not thinking about rules when you’re eating them, and you’re really eating intuitively.'”
Jackie said, “I’m not there yet.” She added, “I try to recognize my hunger cues and eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m not hungry anymore, but I’m not at the point where I feel comfortable following hunger cues all day without a set limit.”
Jackie says that “How I feel about my body is more important to me. I need to get a lot farther with that.”
For Jackie, the summertime can bring up a lot of different feelings. As she said, “I was filming with a small tank top on, and all I could think was, “What about this area and this area?” And, well, who cares? It’s just skin.”
Jackie thinks it’s essential to be honest about her problems. “I don’t want people to think that it’s a swift and easy process to recover because it’s not,” she said.
The star said that getting better from an eating disorder is “absolutely possible” and talked about some of her recent achievements, like feeling like she has “more freedom.”
“We were filming, and when we were done, a group of us were going out to dinner,” she said. “In the past, if that weren’t a planned night out, I would have gone home. I would have found a reason not to go and go home. But I just ate dinner outside.”
